World War II military aircraft hold a special fascination for modelers. Kits for planes of that era are issued in an end-less stream.

I was always interested in US Army and Navy planes - even before WWII. They were smaller, more personalized and their unique markings and color schemes delighted the eye. An air magazine recently printed an article about old fighter planes, including the Boeing F4B-2, forerunner of the famous F4B-4. It fired me up to develop an RC model which succeeded beyond my fondest expectations.

I kept it small (36 in span), powering it with an economical OS 15 engine. It flies on three channels, rudder, elevator and motor. It's a handsome little ship and has aroused quite a bit of interest among my flying friends. Several are building their own versions.

Viewing the flashing yellow wings as the model banks and zooms against the blue sky is a real thrill. As you throttle back and then turn into the landing ap-proach, it makes one glad to have discovered this wonderful hobby of ours.

Fuselage: Cut the sides from 1/8 medium-hard balsa sheet, Use contact cement to add the vertical-grain 1/16 balsa sheet doubler which ends in front of former E. Lay one fuselage side down inside face up, and cement into position the firewall and formers H and E. Glue the other side of the fuselage to this assembly, making sure it lines up evenly in all directions.

Add the 1/8 plywood front lower fuselage section. Glue in formers C and D and the cockpit floor. Cement formers F and G as you glue together the tail end of the fuselage. Add the tri-angular gussets at the firewall, and the triangular pieces of 1/16 balsa sheet stock behind former E. Drill the 1/4 in diameter holes for the dowels but don't add them yet. Add the 1/16 sheeting to the top of the fuselage, using sheet stack for the flat portion and 1/4 in-wide strips where the curves are. Do not add the balsa block at the end of the fuse-lage until the stabilizer is in place..."
