About this Plan

Sun Fli 4. Radio control pattern plane. Wingspan 59 in, wing area 710 sq in.

As printed in the Italian magazine, Modellismo.

Quote (google-translated): "Since I arrived in the USA and discovered eBay, I've been able to indulge my passion for vintage modeling and, aside from getting radios and motors that I could only dream of when I was a boy, I began building the models that my heroes used in the 1960s.

So I started with Hal deBolt and built myself a Live Wire Trainer, which is the Graupner Satellite that I had assembled in 1963, then I moved on to Ed Kazmirski (Orion and Taurus), and finally Phil Kraft (and there are many here: Ugly Stik and Kwik Fli in all formats!).

So we arrive at the end of the 1960s, when Joe Bridi appears on the scene. Before building a Dirty Birdy (which was also used by Phil Kraft in the early 1970s), I had the opportunity to collaborate with Marc de Angelis on building a Sun Fli IV, the model with which Bridi won the 1968 Nationals. I say cooperate because Marc started it and I finished it!

Before starting, I always make a detailed table that gives me the basic dimensions of the model and that allows me to calculate the ideal weight based on my wing loading objectives.

Once the structure was completed, the model looked like you see here. A few more finishes were needed - the front 'cheeks,' the fuel tank cap - but the bulk was done. After several coats of glue to prepare the structure, I covered it, as usual, in heavy Modelspan: white for the wings and horizontal plane, orange for the fuselage and vertical plane.

For the radio, wanting to continue to be 'vintage', I opted for my trusty Kraft Signature, with Kraft KPS-24 servos. Note that I still fly in AM on the frequencies allowed in the USA for 72 MHz. The system works perfectly, I have no interference and, even though I have to each time report the frequency in use on the appropriate board, generally I don't have any problems because at my field now everyone flies on 2.4 GHz..."

Joe Bridi never won the Nationals, at least not the ones in U.S.A. ... neither in 1968 (as stated in the article; Phil Kraft is the one who won in '68) nor in any other year. He came close a few times, but no cigar. I think he competed and won in Mexico multiple times, but don't know the dates.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
