About this Plan

F-105 Thunderchief. Free flight scale model for rubber power. WIngspan 15 in.

Note this kit is essentially a static display model, but it does use traditional stick and tiissue construction. Here on Outerzone we have to tag it as something, so we are going with rubber. We would argue this could make a usable flying model with a tractor prop layout and rubber power.

Discontinued kit from Dumas.

Steve, Mary, I saw this morning that you've added the Dumas F-105 to the plans archive. Here are a few pictures of the model converted to rubber free flight with a pusher prop. To keep the weight down I replaced the plastic parts with balsa structure - the inspiration for the air inlet structure came from Steve Bage's smaller Jetex F-105D (oz15159). Covering is silver Esaki printed with flight simulator graphics.
The completed model came out at about 57g without rubber and has been flying with about 20g motors. As you might imagine it has been tricky to trim, needs to fly pretty fast and is very sensitive to CG location. My best flight so far is about 35 seconds, most memorable flight was a formation launch with Vance Gilbert's big XB-51 documented on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxh6W4zZjeA
The long forward fuselage has proved fragile - the model is now awaiting its fourth front end rebuild. I'm considering converting it from pusher to tractor while I have it apart.
Thanks again for all you do to keep these plans available.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
