Feuervogel 2 (oz16774)
About this Plan
Feuervogel 2 (He-RAK 17). Free flight rocket glider model. Wingspan 12 in.
Quote: "The 'Feuervogel' (Firebird) is a legendary, arrow-shaped rocket glider designed by the German graphic artist and rocket scientist Hans Held in the 1950s and 1960s and distributed through toy companies. The model's aerodynamics were based on the well-known delta-wing designs of Alexander Lippisch.
Important details about the model and designer:
Propulsion: The glider used the legendary 'Held 1000' solid-fuel propulsion system, also developed by Hans Held, which provided the necessary thrust for vertical takeoff. The motormout can be replaced to 18mm one running modern Klima (A-D) motors.
Construction: Two commercial versions (Feuervogel 2 by Hegi) one was made of lightweight, hollow plastic (ABS shells) the other one purely handcrafted. Held himself also built purely handcrafted models from balsa wood.
The inventor: Hans Held (1914–1995) was a true jack-of-all-trades. Besides his passion for model rocketry, he was a successful animator and advertising graphic designer who, among other things, created the famous comic character 'Mecki' for the TV guide Hörzu."

Quote: "I would be very pleased if you could publish the digital legacy of Hans Held's rocket glider. Enclosed you will find the digitized Hegi kit Feuervogel 2 (wooden construction), circa 1974. Enjoy! Thank you and best regards.
Emanuel Strobel"

Update 28/5/2026: Added translated instructions, thanks to DavidTerrell.
Quote: "Steve & Mary, I’ve translated the instructions into English and added the pages interleaved with the German pages. Viewing the PDF as “Page Display” > “Two Page View” places the German and English pages side-by-side. Cheers, David"

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
