About this Plan
ASW 17. Radio control scale glider model. Wingspan 1820 mm.
Quote: "ASW 17. Prefabricated construction kit for an RC model glider. Construction and Operating Instructions.
General: As the span of the ASW 17 model is less than 2 m, it was necessary at the overall-planning stage to put the standard of flight performance before the main characteristics of the original "ASW 17" built by Messrs. Schleicher-Ffugzeugbau. The Hegi "ASW 17" has therefore been kept simple as far as construction is concerned but combines excellent flight performance for its size with a very attractive appearance.
The usual tools are required to construct the model: a balsa knife, fret-saw, glass-headed pins, sanding block with coarse and fine sandpaper, set square (901, pliers, scissors, razor blade, drill, brush, pencil (not a copying pencil or ball-point pen) and a glass vessel. The most important requisite is an even, unwarped building board.
The individual work steps are largely determined by the sequence of the building plan numbers, It is necessary to read the appropriate section of the building instructions completely and thoroughly before each work step, consulting the construction plan as you go. The list of parts printed at the end of these instructions gives the designation, material and dimensions of each numbered part.
The die-stamped parts can easily be pressed out of the boards. If a die-stamped part remains hanging on by one fibre, cut the fibre with your knife and smooth it off with sandpaper.
The materials used for this type of model necessarily include certain tolerances. The constructor therefore has the added task of compensating these himself by working the individual parts appropriately.
Fuselage construction: Pin the fuselage plan view of the construction plan onto an even, unwarped board and cover it with transparent foil to prevent the parts from sticking to the plan. Pin both fuselage caps 1 to the appropriate contours of the drawing. Glue half-frames 2 to 9 to the fuselage caps perpendicular to the board (please use set square) in the positions indicated on the plan using hard adhesive (Stabilit-dur) and secure with pins, Frames 5 and 6 must be glued together. This job must be done carefully so that the top half of the fuselage to be built later is flush with the bottom half.
Insert bottom fuselage cap 10 using adhesive. Glue stiffener strips 11 to the curved surfaces of frames 2 to 5. If the necessary bending of the strips 11 causes too much strain, make cuts in them on the sides facing inwards about 5 mm deep and approx, 2 cm apart using a fret-saw. These cuts must be filled with hard adhesive later. To prevent the strips 11 from sliding upwards on the curves of frames 2 to 5, the die-stamped plywood clips 2a to 5a included in the kit are pushed on over the top immediately behind the respective half frames and secured with clothes pegs (Fig. 1). The lower fuselage shell must remain on the building board while drying and during the following work steps. This admittedly complicates attachment of the skin slightly but has the decisive advantage that the shell can no longer warp, or at least not badly.
First carefully remove any uneveness and projecting edges with a long sanding block. Then fit on the skin 12, which is slightly higher than necessary but already pre-formed, sanding the bottom edges a little step by step until the skin rests evenly everywhere on frames 6 and 9 with the bottom edges on the building board (Fig. 2). When this has been achieved it can be stuck on using contact adhesive (please observe the instructions on the adhesive tube).
If a section of skin should ever break, you can easily replace it with a balsa sheet which is the same size and not too hard; dampen it well on one side only and it will then arch of its own accord. The final curve will be obtained when the skin is stuck to the fuselage shell..."

Quote: "Hello, In 1976/1977 my first RC glider was the ASW 17 from Hegi. Recently I found the complete set of drawings and building instructions that came with the kit. As the ASW 17 from Hegi is missing in your collection of Hegi plans, I have scanned the plans. Together with that some old pictures of my ASW 17. Clearly not the best quality (scans from over 40 years old pictures), but it is the best I can do. I also added 2 pages from the 1976 Hegi catalogue (also poor quality) and a foto of the box of the kit, as found on internet.
Best Regards,
Paul"
Note the original (German) instructions include some useful build pics, along with exploded view and parts list, that do not appear in the English or French version.

ScaleType: This (oz16768) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schleicher_ASW_17
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

It is wonderful to have this latest addition of the ASW 17 from the renowned manufacturer HEGI. Here is a picture of my old HEGI catalog that might interest you to make use of it [011]. Congratulations for your work.Fabio Gil, Brazil - 28/05/2026

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
