About this Plan

Ercoupe. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 23 in.

Planfile includes full build instructions.

Quote (google-translated): "Thaco series. Read carefully before starting the build! The models in this series are primarily intended to be as faithful copies of the prototype as possible, which is why the form cannot be of the same class as models specially designed for flight. If the model is to be made flying, unnecessary details are omitted and the landing gear is made of piano wire. The stabilizer and fin are made of thinner material. Some slats can be omitted, as well as the rudder, etc. details are only marked with a marker. For the covering, Japanese paper or similar impregnated with zapon varnish diluted with thinner is used. The V-shape of the wing is increased by about 5-7°. A rubber hook made of piano wire is attached to the rear of the fuselage and another in the propeller, which is made slightly larger and with wider blades than the scale propeller. The various details that are printed on the sheet in the kit are cut out with a razor blade if the material is thin, otherwise a jigsaw is suitable. All gluing should be done with a good balsa glue, eg Thaco glue.

The body: The drawing is attached to a flat surface of treetex or similar and covered with transparent wax paper or greaseproof paper to protect against glue. One half of the body is built directly on the drawing. Strips are pinned to the outer contours of the body and the frame is cut out and glued perpendicular to the surface between the strips. The other strips are glued into the frame's recesses and allowed to dry well, after which the completed half of the body is carefully removed from the drawing. The corresponding half of the body is now to be built on the back of the drawing. The position of the frame and outer strips is transferred to the back of the drawing with carbon paper. The remaining half of the body is now built in the same way as the first and is then glued together with this.

The wing: The spars are cut out and threaded onto the main beam and pinned to the drawing. The leading and trailing edge strips are attached and raised if necessary to the correct position against the spars. The wingtip is glued into place and when the whole thing is dry, the rudders are built. The leading and trailing edges of the wing are sanded to the correct profile according to the drawing. Hinges for rudders etc. are made of pins, copper wire, sewing thread, cardboard etc. The corresponding wing half is built on the back of the drawing..."

    ScaleType: This (oz16732) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ERCO_Ercoupe
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
