About this Plan
Sopwith Camel. Free flight scale model WWI fighter for rubber power. Wingspan 24 in.
Direct submission to Outerzone.
Quote: "Steve, Here is another Sterling kit that I am surprised that is not on Outerzone (or at least I can not find it). This one is the Sopwith Camel - Kit A26 with a wing span of 24in. Like the other Sterling plans I just sent you these came from Hip Pocket Aeronautics web site before it crashed... Thanks. Roger"

ScaleType: This (oz16730) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopwith_Camel
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

A Cox 020 in a 24" 'Camel'? I once put one in a 32" Dart Kitten. It performed about 40 high speed loops before the fuel ran out, and when it landed, all the paint had fallen off.bill dennis - 02/05/2026
Agreed. I had a 72" R/C Wanderer glider that climbed like a homesick angel on a Cox .020 mounted above the wing on a power-pod. However, it used to be 'a thing' for FF Scale classes to set the airplanes up to perform a nearly vertical screaming corkscrew with far too much power, then transition into a stable glide when the engine stopped. All about maximum flight points instead of scale-like flight characteristics.

My biggest question is how would you keep a motor on the firewall with the supplied "Plastic Nut Plates"? I seems that just about every kit had these in it to attached these little "screaming" motors on them. I could never figure out why they would include them in the kit.

Doh! Never mind. I guess it helps to read the "Engine Installation". It looks like the "Plastic Nut Plates" are used to keep the actual nuts from coming loose. That does seem very reasonable. I guess this is why I never have graduated from rubber power.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
