About this Plan

Vought F6U-1 Pirate. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 27 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Steve, Here's my latest jet rubber powered Free Flight 27" span. I love these old first jets and the Vought F6U was one of them. Just love the vertical stab's shape and the horizontal stab's additional fins, kinda a 3 tail.

Wikipedia has this to say about the Pirate:
The Vought F6U Pirate is the Vought company's first jet fighter, designed for the United States Navy during the mid-1940s. Although pioneering the use of turbojet power as the first naval fighter with an afterburner and composite material construction, the aircraft proved to be underpowered and was judged unsuitable for combat. None were ever issued to operational squadrons and they were relegated to development, training, and test roles before they were withdrawn from service in 1950.

I use the same Rees' sliced rib wing construction. Tutorial link noted on the plan, fuselage uses a ladder jib, tutorial link noted on the plan.
Vertical stab is built using laminated outline with vertical 1/16" spar with outer ribs of 1/32"x1/8" strips. This gives a nicer fuller looking stab instead of the thin almost sheet looking stab.
Horizontal stab uses 3/32" SQ and sheet balsa. I like to add and additional top rib over the stab ribs and sand to airfoil. (not shown completely on the plan).

Thanks again Steve and Mary for bring all these wonderful plans to view on the net. :)
Regards,
Tom Akery/Sky9pilot"

ScaleType: This (oz16707) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_F6U_Pirate
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Tom, I'm with you. I also like the looks of the early jets. The looks of the F6U is ok, but I like the looks of the Douglas F3D Skynight better. To me I like the squared off tips better than the rounded tips. Vive la différence!

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
