About this Plan
Handley Page. Radio control scale model. Wingspan 1590 mm.
Quote (google translated): "A stylish vintage model in semi-scale construction. Handley Page, by Klaus Nietzer.
Despite its simple construction, this model is not suitable for beginners. Wing construction is somewhat difficult, as the necessary ribs can only be partially manufactured within the rib block. The cutouts must be made during assembly.
The entire structure is made of balsa plywood. A 6.5cc Max or Webra engine is used for propulsion. This is sufficient even for a ground takeoff on a grass strip. The wings are attached by clipping them on; the aileron pushrod can be connected directly to the servo mounted in the fuselage or operated via a bell crank (see photo). A 150cc metal tank (like a milk can) with appropriate fuel line and venting is sufficient.
The RC system is accessible from below and closed with a cover. The engine is mounted inverted, which makes it a bit tricky to start. However, it can also be mounted sideways. With the engine mounted inverted, it's advisable to run two wires from the glow plug to permanently installed banana plug sockets, as the landing gear makes it difficult to use a glow plug clamp during preheating.
The model pictured was built by a fellow club member as a prototype, omitting some of the final details. He was very skeptical about its expected flight performance, and I was also a little uneasy before the first flight. However, our concerns quickly turned to enthusiasm, as the first launch was a complete success, met with enthusiastic applause from the spectators and fellow club members.
It's a beautiful sight to see the model, reminiscent of early grasshoppers, purring past at low altitude.
We begin with the wing and tail assembly: Ribs 33 and 41 are used to create a rib block without main spar cutouts. Ribs 41-44 are formed from balsa wood.
Continuing in brief: Place the lower main spars onto the plan and pin the leading edge in the curved shape shown. Position the ribs and make the cutouts. Make ribs 33, 34, and 35 from plywood. Sand the upper wing surface with a sanding block so that the airfoil is roughly preserved. Now make the cutouts for the upper main spars and glue them in place. Cut out the ailerons and assemble them from parts 51, 52, and 46. Attach the plug connections at right angles according to sketch 1, glue the stiffener (item 56) from rib to rib, and insert the Bowden cable..."

Update 16/4/2026: Replaced this plan with a re-scaled version, thanks to Chuck Johnson. Now at correct full size of wingspan (approx) 62 in. Many of these old FMT plans were published at 66% of the fullsize. Fixed now.

ScaleType: This (oz16697) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handley_Page_Type_E
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
