About this Plan

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Congratulations! Thank you for purchasing the most realistic propeller-driven, jet-like model, the F/A-18 Hornet, from Direct Connection R/C. This is the second in our series of jet-style models, with the successful F-20 Tigershark being the first.

The F/A-18 Hornet is a high performance jet-like sport scale airplane that is propeller driven instead of ducted fan. This means that no complicated building is required in routing and plumbing a ducted fan unit. Instead, the kit uses standard building procedures. Remember, this is not a beginner's kit and assumes the builder has built at least three kits before this one.

The F/A-18 Hornet was designed to use today's .60 to .91 engines. If a non-schneurle ported engine is used then performance may be marginal. Standard schneurle engines work fine and aerobatic maneuvers are performed effortlessly. Speed is in the 70 - 85 mph range with these engines. For those of you who want maximum performance, hot schneurle motors with tuned pipes and retracts will push the F/A 4 8 Hornet over the 100 mph barrier and produce out-of-sight vertical performance. The kit, however, only has the materials to build the fixed gear version as will be built by the majority of fliers. Any additional materials needed for retracts, flaps, or tuned pipe installation are not supplied. Flaperons are not recommended on the F/A-18 Hornet. The plans and instructions show what is needed and required for retract and flap installation. Please remember that whichever route you decide to take, the F/A-18 Hornet is able to slow down for realistic nose-high landings.

The kit uses standard balsa and ply construction. The balsa is standard AAA grade with the exception of two places. By design the F/A-18 Hornet uses C-grade or hard balsa for the fin/rudder and stabilizer. Don't worry about having a heavy model as it will come out to its advertised weight... "

    ScaleType: This (oz16651) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_F/A-18_Hornet
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
