Quote: "CURTISS WRIGHT XP-87
16” RUBBER TWIN
DRAWN 16 NOV 2017

This plan was inspired by a cookup on HPA modeling site. They were building various Dime Scale style models and someone mentioned a twin Dimer and I was thinking early jets so I decided to try this light bomber experimental aircraft as a twin with clear props.

CONSTRUCTION:

WING: The wing is constructed using 1/16” sq and sheet balsa. Sheet ribs. If you look close you’ll see blue lines noting where the nacelles are placed under the wing. The wing spars are 1/16” sq over and under the spars. I would have trouble leaving the spars alone without adding vertical grain balsa spreaders between the top and bottom spars from the fuselage out to the nacelles for additional strength. But I do tend to over build my models.

NACELLES: The nacelles are built up using 1/16” sheet formers and 1/16” sq stringers. Prop motor sticks are what the formers are built on. The cowls are blocks of 1/16” sheets laminated cross grain and sanded to shape. Motor sticks made of 1/16” x1/8” balsa made into a “T” beam motor stick.

FUSELAGE: Box style construction is used in building the fuselage. I prefer one-piece wings, so I show it to be constructed for a one-piece wing. But I also show the fuselage with wing pockets for just outer wing panels with no center section to the wing. Of course it’s the Dimer construction using 1/16” sq and sheet balsa.

EMPENNAGE: Tail feathers are 1/16” sq and sheet balsa as per the plan."

    ScaleType: This (oz16638) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtiss-Wright_XF-87_Blackhawk
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
