Quote: "CURTISS C-46 COMMANDO
36” SPAN
DRAWN 2017

The inspiration for this plan was my father-in-law who I never knew. He passed away before I had the chance to meet him. He flew the Commando over the Hump in WWII and later flew the C-119 in Korea.

CONSTRUCTION:

WING: Wing is constructed using the Dave Rees’ sliced rib construction. This builds a very strong and light wing. Add 1.5” dihedral under each tip. https://www.ffscale.co.uk/rees.htm
The above link is Mike Stuart’s tutotrial on building a Dave Rees’ sliced rib wing.

FUSELAGE: This build utilizes the ladder jig. Here’s a link to an example of the ladder jig used by Maxfliart in his build of the Beech Stagger Wing twin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUYY1dqfH8
This builds a nice straight fuselage and it’s strong and light.

EMPENNAGE: The horizontal stab is built with laminated wing tips. 3 lams of 1/32”X3/32” around a template traced from the plan. I use foam board from the Dollar Store to make my patterns. I wax or use Teflon tape around the edges to help release the laminations from the pattern. The spar and ribs are made with 3/32” sq . The vertical stab is made in what I call “in the air” completion. Build the outline flat on the building board and when dry add the vertical spar, I use thin super glue so I don’t have to wait along time. Once this is set. I add the 1/32”X1/8” rib strips over the spar and attached to the L.E. and T.E."

ScaleType: This (oz16614) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtiss_C-46_Commando
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.
Corrections? Use the correction form to tell us the new/better ScaleType link we should be using. Thanks.

What's interesting about Tom Akery in addition to his plans is the discovery of planes that we don't always know. Thank you for these pages of history.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
