About this Plan

Scimitar. Control line profile stunt trainer model. Wingspan 52 in, for .35 to .40 engines.

Quote: "A tough little bird that's perfect working out those pre-season kinks. Scimitar, by Allen Brickhaus.

IT HAPPENS TO me every year: I've got a new 'Nats-worthy' plane finished, painted, and waxed, but I'm afraid to fly it in those March winds. To conquer these fears somewhat, and to recondition my shaky flying habits, dulled by winter's cold, I designed the Scimitar to begin my pre-season practice. It was designed to be tough under adverse flying, and I should add, adverse landing conditions. I have had a nice glide path all set up for landing, only to end up viewing the top of the wing when the wind lifts the outboard wing to almost vertical. Then it slams the plane down because it lacks lift. Often sturdy wing-mounted landing gear will be driven up into the wing, destroying ribs and creating a repair or rebuild job.

I also wanted the Scimitar to be capable of flying the Precision Aerobatic Pattern as well as any stunt plane plans available from Model Airplane News. It should be light enough to keep from overworking your motor, but heavy enough for good velocity and penetration under windy weather flying. It has enough adjustable features to trim for various flying cir-cumstances and is constructed for easy repair in the event of damage.

CONSTRUCTION: The foam wing I selected for the Scimitar was a Gieseke Nobler section, cut to my specific lengths by J&K Foam Wings. The wing can be purchased with or without landing gear ribs - I got mine without. The inboard panel is cut to 26 inches in length and the outboard is 25 inches long. I used 1/2-inch balsa for wing tips, which brings the total span to 52 inches.

Bush the leadout holes on a bellcrank. Sig or Top Flite work well. My flexible leadouts are covered at the bellcrank with 1/16-inch o.d. copper tubing. Place a 1-1/2 inch section of tubing over the leadout wire..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
