36” SPAN TWIN RUBBER POWER

Dave Lentz asked a while back for a Canadair CL-215 or a Cl-415 if I could get around to making a plan for him. So Dave, here’s a CL-215 for you. It wouldn’t take much to convert to the CL-415 with additional wingtip fins and vertical fins added to the horizontal stab. Of course the radial engine would have to be converted to the turboprop engine. Again, this wouldn’t take too much re-design.

I tend to modify most of the plans I build from.

WING: The wing is built using the cracked rib construction method. This is where the leading edge and trailing edge is laid out on the plans and pinned down. Then the 1/16” sq strips for the bottom of the ribs is glued in place. Once all the lower ribs are in place, it’s time to add the 1/16” sheet spar with the root being ½” tapered to 3/32” at the tip. When the spar is pinned and glued in place the top of the rib is added using 1/16” sq strips. The strip is glued to the L.E. (leading edge) and then gently bent over the spar and trimmed at the T.E. (trailing edge) of the wing panel and glued in placed. I usually use Cyano glue. A drop of this glue is applied to the rib at the crack over the spar. Once all the upper ribs are in place, it’s time to add the turbulator strip to round out the front of the airfoil. See the airfoil root view below the wing drawing.

THE FUSELAGE, is made using the ladder jig method. Maxfliart has a nice video on YouTube describing this method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUYY1dqfH8

HORIZONTAL STAB: The horizontal stab is made using 3/32” SQ and sheet balsa.

VERTICAL STAB: The vertical stab is made by using 3/32”x 1/8” strips to make the outline of the vertical stab. Then using a triangular spar from 1/16” sheet balsa, up the middle of the stab. Then using 1/32”X1/8” strips make the outer ribs over the vertical spar attaching them to the L.E. and T.E. of the vertical stab.

This aircraft has been flown by many nations and territories so there are many different schemes available. Hope this plan will help you out Dave!

Regards,
Tom Akery/Sky9pilot
P.S. Many thanks to Steve and Mary for this fine site!!"

ScaleType: This (oz16564) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadair_CL-215
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Tom Akery I have drawings for a Socata/Daher TBM that I would love to see drafted into a FF model, but alas I am all thumbs when it comes to drawing. Are you able to assist? squawk.ident.0311@gmail.com

Doh, my mistake. Hit the wrong tag, should have been 'multi'. Fixed now, many thanks :)

Tom, I cannot thank you enough for your effort in drafting this plan! The best way to honor it would be to build it. I'm currently building the Cal Aero Playboy Senior oz6384, 36-inch WS. I'm about 2/3s done with it. I acquired a Cox 020TD for the Playboy from Ebay and refurbished it, which was an adventure all on to itself! The 020 is running nicely. I'm a slow builder, but once I finish the Playboy, I will start on my CL-215! This will surely light a fire under me to finish the Playboy!
Many Thanks to you and to Outerzone!

Dave,
When you get her built, please post a pict here for Steve and Mary to post.
Thanks...it was a very interesting aircraft.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
