About this Plan

Facetmobile. Peanut scale free flight model. Wingspan 10-1/4 in.

Note this plan was published as a 'Peanut Scale' model, but was printed with wingspan of 10-1/4 inches. See article for more on this.

Quote: "The model for this article was built to 10-1/4 inches span, which the largest that would fit on the agazine centerspread. (I've also built Facetmobiles in 13 and 20 inch spans.) The covering is tissue, while the large windshield area is covered with very thin cellophane (the clear wrapper from Tetley Tea box). The three-blade propeller is scale, and the wheels are made from blue foam, spun on a Dremel tool. The full-size plane is white on top and black on ttom. My model weighs 7 grams with rubber. It climbs at a very steep angle without stalling. A small mount of weight on the right tip is required for turn trim.

The full-size Facetmobile and the models of it have caused a great deal of interest wherever they are flown. If you like something new and exciting in FF scale, this model is for you.

Construction: The plan shows the top side construction on the right and the bottom construction on the left. Build the bottom over the plan, using 1/20 strip balsa. After the bottom surface is pinned down and glued, cut notches in the outline at sections C and D. Prop up the front section 9/16 inch and cement, then prop up the back 1-1/8 inches and cement.

Make the 'horseshoe' former and cement it to the pinned-down bottom surface. Now start laying in the longitudinal strips and attaching them to the top of the horseshoe. Cement the cross members in place. Vertical support struts are required where shown by an X on the plan. The elevons can be pinned down but not yet glued to the rear of the fuselage.

The fuselage can be lifted from the plan and completed in your hands. Add gussets where shown and make the landing gear struts from 1/32 round bamboo. Cement these in position using 1/32 balsa gussets to anchor them. The gear axles are .012 music wire bent over, wrapped and glued to the bamboo struts. Sheet the nose with 1/32 balsa and make the nose block, which is triangular on top and half-round on bottom. Build the two vertical fins from 1/32 balsa..."

Quote: "Howdy from soon to be sub-zero Oklahoma. I saw this post on facebook and vaguely remember I had seen the plans. So I went to OZ and zero, zip, nada. Searching my own files I found my original scans from Model Builder... So here with the subject Facetmobile FMX-4 N117WD, full article and separate plans. As always thanks for all your dedicated work.

I spent a couple of weeks building one of these last autumn [main pic, 005] . I had seen someone achieving reasonable flights on Facebook so I assumed I would at least be rewarded by some sort of performance as it’s certainly light enough . Considering it is a delta one could have expected a modicum of stability but it was hopeless and worse unpredictable. There is no doubt that the designer, a Grumman employee, was talented but it cannot be claimed that the full size has caught on . This could be because one has to climb in from underneath (the opening of any top glazing in flight would cause a catastrophic loss of lift, and as like Concord the promised low speed approach has to be achieved by adopting a steep angle of attack the contraption has to be landed by peering through the floor!
I look forward to being corrected but only by successful builders please.

Hi Richard
I think I saw Chris Strachan flying one successfully a few years ago. I had never heard of it but it was going well, without any drama.

I do have some experience with this model, not all that good. I was selected to test fly one built by a friend, a bigger version of this model but still small and electric powered. It wallered (that's a technical term) side to side most of the flight and never seemed to be much under control, elevons in the back. We tried a bunch of adjustments, never quite made it fly in a reasonable manner. We considered it pretty much a failure.

I think the term ‘wallered’ is a perfect technical description.

Full marks to Chris Strachan then!

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
