Quote: "CONSOLIDATED VULTEE X-81
27” SPAN TWIN TURBOPROP/JET
DRAWN 23 SEPT 2019
Here’s another of the “X” planes being proposed/built toward the end of WWII. My plan is inaccurate showing Convair when it should say Consolidated. My apologies that this wasn’t caught before being submitted. This model could be built according to the FAC rules as a pusher and tractor model. The X-81 had a prop up front and a auxiliary jet engine in the rear to assist in performance in combat. The prop to allow long distances and the jet augment for combat performance.
Love these planes and the different proposals that were made at the end of the war and the years following. Great discoveries were being made on aerodynamics and propulsion.
CONSTRUCTION:
WING: Rees’ sliced rib construction is used for the wing.
FUSELAGE: I built on a ladder jig, alternating the stringers from side to side to balance the tension in the fuselage.
EMPENNAGE: 3/32”sq and sheet balsa is used in constructing the horizontal stab flat in the building board. The vertical fin/rudder is one of my favorite techniques, outline built flat on the board and then finished in the air after the vertical spar is added to the outline structure and then 1/32”x1/8” ribs added over the spar to the L.E. and T.E"

ScaleType: This (oz16545) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_Vultee_XP-81
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
