About this Plan

Dusty. Radio control sport model, for electric power with brushless motor. Wingspan 930 mm. Uses foam and balsa construction.

Quote (google-translated): "A small, fun electric model that can be quickly reproduced in series to assemble a fun aerobatic team with your friends. Dusty, by Tonino Merlettini.

Several years ago, after the passing of our beloved maestro Giacomino Rosati, we decided to commemorate him with an annual event for friends and family consisting of a folkloristic and easy-going flight session by the sea, followed by a sumptuous banquet.

Last year, for the occasion, we decided to go all out and require all participants to build and fly a simple yet impressive model, also to gratify the occasional audience who happened to pass by and watch our flights. We practically imposed the law: He who doesn't fly, doesn't eat. So... Dusty for everyone!

In the wake of the famous animated film, just released in its second version, we put together a little project from the 'Boia chi molla' (Boy Who Gives Up) series. Within a couple of months, we reached the day of series testing with ten models! A resounding success, which, thanks in part to the numerous requests for the project, encouraged me to offer it to a wider audience of model airplane enthusiasts.

The model is made of Styrofoam, Depron, and a little balsa. We cut it with a TGA, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it by hand with the appropriate templates.

The fuselage is made from 50 mm thick Styrofoam, but 40 mm is sufficient for the wings if you want to save money. The wing is in three pieces: a central one without dihedral and two outer wings with 35 mm dihedral at each end, glued with 5-minute epoxy. For greater stability, I added a 1° twist to the wing during cutting. The ailerons are made from 3 mm Depron + 1.5 mm balsa composite and are hinged at the top with a hot-melt polyester strip (made from transparent sheets used for laminating documents).

The central section, where the rubber bands and the fuselage will be pressed, is reinforced with a couple of layers of wrapping paper glued with vinyl or a strip of 120 g/m2 glass fiber and epoxy resin. The 6 mm birch plywood engine and landing gear mounts and the reinforcing cheeks for the rubber band attachment pegs to secure the wing will be glued to the fuselage.

The tailplane is a 3 mm Depron + 1.5 mm balsa composite with a tape interposed..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
