About this Plan

Sportsman 30 Early (AKA Banner Sportsman). Free flight rubber sport model. Wingspan 30 in.

Note the Sportsman 30 kit appeared in (at least) 2 forms, which we are calling Early and Late. The early version (1941) uses a simpler wing layout. The late version (1950) includes a planked forward fuselage.

This here is the early version. For the late version, see Sportsman 30 Late (oz16478).

Quote: "This is a Henry Struck design with a slightly convoluted history. The design was originally kitted in 1941 as the 'Banner Sportsman' with wartime materials. See attached pictures of box [pic 003] and plan [pic 004], courtesy of John Koptonak. Note the 'Special Note' and 'Directions for using new Air-Tex printed sheet' on the plan picture [pic 005] highlighting the substitute materials.

At some point in the mid-40s the kit was re-released as the 'Sportsman 30' [pic 006] with printed balsa parts sheets and the new name on the plan but the same 1941 copyright date. Both these releases were rubber-powered and other than the name and materials are identical. Plan and printwood for this release are attached, scanned from an original kit. Note the very fine bamboo strips for the nose stringers [pic 007]."

Steve, Mary, I did a quick build of the Struck Sportsman 30 over the holidays - here's a few pictures [main pic, 008-011] to go along with the plan listing. First day's flying went very well, I've put it away until I can add a DT. There's a short build and fly video of the model here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vPDWi3U0H4
Thanks again,

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
