The description here is kind of like coming in on the tail end of someone else's conversation. "Midwest Foam Wing" for what design(s)? The wingspan of this wing plan would be most helpful, too.DB - 15/12/2025
Fair point. For a start, to find plans on here that use this wing, you can search using this link: https://outerzone.co.uk/search/results.asp?keyword=Midwest+Foam+Wing&Xsearchcompletetext=Yes that's all the plans on Oz that mention 'Midwest Foam Wing' in the description text.

Have set the span here to 42 inch. This plan here has 7 bays in a wing, each bay 3 inch wide.

Thank you, Andy. I've wanted to do some of the Midwest kits from my youth, especially the Fokker/Nieuport and the Seafoam.

Hi Andy. I am thrilled to see you are back with another balsa alternative plan for a foam wing replacement.
Your return with this Midwest Foam Wing replacement plan presents an ideal opportunity for me to present to you a suggestion for another balsa alternative plan for a foam wing replacement.
Back in the late ‘70s, SIG Manufacturing produced a series of four RC plane kits called the “SIG Foam-Wing Fun-Fly Series”. All four of these SIG plane kits were powered by an .09-15cu engine. They were all 3 channel RC (no aileron). And they all used the same 45-inch foam wing design. These four SIG kits were the Colt, Klipper, Scamp, and Super Sport.

Model plane designer Peter Miller (RIP in November 2024) had an RC trainer plan published 25 years ago that made use of this SIG 45-inch foam wing that was still available for purchase back then. Miller called this trainer design “Signorina”. BUT, a publishing error had put a title of “Signorita” on the article page, on the contents page, and on the cover of the issue that this plan appeared in. In Miller’s written text in the published building article, he is calling the model “Signorina”. The Signorita/Signorina was published in Aviation Modeller International, August 2000. If you do a search for info on this model, run a search on both names “Signorita” and “Signorina”. Signorita is a full-size free plan in the AMI 8/00 issue.

I have searched the web for a balsa alternative plan for this once popular SIG foam wing. I did find a discussion at RCGroups forums on this topic:

Hi i to am a fan of sig foam wing. I am a sig dealer an met with the guys at sig one year at Teledo Mr Grets told me he made the rib patterns and a guy in northern Iowa made them for that series. also that wing was use on the first Dura Plane by Duracraft inc of Royal Oak, MI

Sig Wing, for anyone who wants to plot one out:
44 5/8 span tip to tip with dihedral.
chord is 7.5” at center, 5.75 at tip, see note below, LE is straight, swept TE.
1.75” dihedral each tip
Root/tip thickness: 1 - 1/4”, 1 - 1/16”, about an 18% thickness.
Best approximate airfoil is probably the Rhode St. Genese 36. NOTE: Like the Ace wing, the TE is somewhat blunted.
Data taken from a new unused Sig wing.
A decent approximate wing would be from Ted Straders Miss L. I will plot out a plan from Compufoil once my old PC is up and running again. May be a while though.

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
