Albatross 47 (oz16363)

Albatross 47 (oz16363) by George Reich 1990 - plan thumbnail

About this Plan

Albatross. Free flight old timer power model. Wingspan 47 in. Wing area 294 sq in. For 1/2A engines.

Note the original George Reich 80 inch Albatross (oz5406) design was first published in Air Trails, 1941. This here is a later plan at reduced size, for 1/2A power.

This is the 47 inch Albatross plan from Klarich Kits. Clearly this is a re-purposed 80 inch plan, rescaled and with the title at top right amended by writing "47" over the original "80" by hand.

Note all of the dimensions and wood sizes shown on this plan are manifestly incorrect. Apart from the number 47.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Here's a plan from a Klarich Kustom Kit from the nineties. Sorry for the kit photo. It looks like it was lifted from a newspaper."

Quote: "I find it historically significant because it reminds me of how bad those plans were."

“Reminds us of how bad those plans were”
That is the understatement of the year! Around the time this plane was being flown Down Under, I built a 1/2A Texaco Lanzo Racer. A 12 foot model scaled down to 50 inches. There weren’t even wood sizes available to match the plans. The spar notches in the ribs where the wing tapered were WAY off. And the fuselage plan was reduced a little more than the wing.
Harry Klarich has long gone to the Big Flying Field in the Sky. He was the kindest man who churned out thousands of kits off of John Pond’s plans without benefit of lasers and CAD in the kitchen with his wife and disabled son. They could never be better than the plans. At swap meets, steer clear of any kits with elliptical wings (eg Clippers)
Rest in Peace Harry. And thanks for the memories OZ.

Note the upright engine in the photo. An inverted and cowled Cox would’ve been hard to do but this mod looks tastefully done.
Keep the tail light!

This plan is not without its shortcomings but it is much more accurate than (oz2085). That plan appears to have been drawn from memory. If building an Albatross (a much under-rated design), use the Model Builder plan drawn by Phil Berhardt or the O'Reilly plan. I'll try to obtain the later.

Looks like it has a lot of potential! Quite streamlined by the standards of the time. George Reich also had Wakefield models where the fuselage cross section transitioned from rectangular to triangular . I’d love to see some aerodynamic data for this feature. But, it just looks right.
George married another famous modeler’s sister: Dick Korda.

Was that Trevor Boundy's 1/2A Albatross?

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
