About this Plan

Shin Meiwa UF-XS. Free flight scale model for rubber power.

Quote: "SHIN MEIWA UF-XS EXPERIMENTAL FLYING BOAT. The Shin Meiwa UF-XS is a uniquely modified experimental flying boat developed in Japan during the early 1960s. Originally a Grumman SA-16A Albatross, it underwent extensive redesign to improve takeoff and landing performance in rough seas, incorporating innovative features such as a blown high-pressure air system and a four-engine configuration.

CONSTRUCTION: WING: Both the main wing and horizontal stabilator are constructed using the Dave Rees’ Sliced Rib Wing Construction. A great tutorial on this technique can be found on Mike Stuart’s site, here’s a link: https://www.ffscale.co.uk/rees.htm

FUSELAGE: The fuselage is built using a ladder jig. This is where all the bulkheads are aligned on the steps of the ladder of the jig on the demarcation line. A video tutorial shows this technique by Tom Hallman/Maxfliart here’s a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUYY1dqfH8

VERTICAL STAB: The vertical stab is built by first building the outline of the stab flat on the building board. Then the vertical spar is added to the cap at the proper angle using super glue. Once the spar is in place start adding the 1/32”x1/8” ribs from the L.E. over the spar to the T.E. from the top to the bottom, noting the angle of the bottom ribs. This is a “T” tail arrangement and the horizontal stab is mounted at the top of the vertical stab on the 1/8” cap. This will make for a fairly stable mount for the horizontal stab.

I encourage you to check out the article and pictures of this interesting aircraft on Vintage Aviation, here’s a link to the article: https://vintageaviationnews.com/aviation-museum-news/the-unique-shin-meiwa-uf-xs-japans-experimental-flying-boat.html

This plan is not built yet but it’s a great variation of the Grumman Flying Boats from the Widgeon, Goose, Mallard, Albatross to this modified HU-16 Albatross now the Shin Meiwa UF-XS Experimental Flying Boat. It’s called a four engine flying boat but it also had two turbo shaft engines to run the forced air through the wing over the flying surfaces and the vertical tail to the horizontal flying surfaces.

Hope you find this plan a fun look at a unique aircraft/flying boat!
Regards,"

Quote: "Steve and Mary, I got inspired this past week looking at Flying boats and especially the Grumman HU-16 Albatross. I came across the Japanese experimental flying boat with short takeoff and rough sea landing and takeoff abilities, the Shin Meiwa UF-XS.
Inclosed find the plans and construction information.
Regards,
Tom Akery"

I've had the pleasure of seeing this special aircraft in person in 2023, at the Gifu-Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum.
Here are some pictures of it as I saw it. It is arrestingly cool imho.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
