Learner (oz16297)
About this Plan
Learner. Free flight trainer model for rubber power. WIngspan 30 in.
Note this is not a fullsize plan. The wing rib is drawn at 100%, the main layout is at 1/3 scale.
Quote: "The Learner, by SW Stevenson. A Very Simple, Easy-to-Build Model for the Beginner.
THE Learner was designed for the builder with very little flying experience. It hardly needs trimming, if well made. First draw up a full-size plan from the drawing. Make a template off the drawing of the rib, and cut out all the ribs. Mount the spar on the plan, cement the ribs on to this, add leading and trailing edges. Join the two halves by means of a centre section. At the same time obtain the dihedral by raising the tips 1-1/2 in. Add bamboo tips.
Fuselage: Build two side frames, invert them on to the drawing of the top view of fuselage, and add cross members, starting at centre. and working towards nose and tail. Be sure it is not warped when finished.
Tail: This is simply flat, and built on the plan. Note the unusual bracing. Add bamboo tips.
Rudder: This is half of tail. Cement at right angles to tail. Landing Gear. Landing gear is wire, and fits into copper or brass tubes cemented in the fuselage. Use plenty of cement. Join the wire by solder or binding and cementing. Add 1i in. wheels, balsa, etc. Covering is white tissue, and then doped to tighten. Details of nose block and tail block are explained on plan. Propeller is a 10 in Imp, 'helical' type. Rubber is 4 to 6 strands of x 1/30 Drome, twice the length of the fuselage.
Flying: Glide the model, and move the wing backwards or forwards to obtain good glide. If the model stalls under power, add a little downthrust by inserting a small piece of balsa between block and model so that the prop points downward."

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
