About this Plan

Grumman Avenger. Free flight scale model WWII torpedo bomber, for rubber power. Wingspan 40 in.

Quote: "Sensational Torpedo Plane! Build the GRUMMAN 'AVENGER'. The Plane That Broke the Backbone of the Jap Navy at Midway! It's the hit of the year, this new 40 inch Joe Ott model of Midway's Avenger. The most deadly torpedo bomber in the world. It's a beautiful and faithful model of this great Grumman ship, an excellent flyer, and carries a six-inch model torpedo completely inside the fuselage. Bomb doors, as shown in illustration open with release of a pre-set trigger while plane is in flight and torpedo is automatically fired in a most realistic way. The Avenger is easy to build and fly because you make it from a genuine OTT-O-FORMER KIT. Kit is complete, including ready-cut Ott-O-Formers and wing ribs and all required materials. At your Dealers NOW. Complete Kit $1.00."

Quote: "I have a plan here from the Joe Ott kit (Grumman Avenger 40in WS) that when unfolding it from the kit it fell apart in strips (where it was folded) because of it being so old. The printed wood (actually cardboard) is fine, but I because the plans fell apart along the fold creases I could only scan the plans in strips for the most part. I have been dragging my feet not looking forward to trying to piece it all together... Thanks for the suggestion it worked out quite well, although it still was a pain the left clavicle. Even though it was a pain I think it turned out out quite nice... Attached are the typical Joe Ott formers and ribs along with the pieced together plan set. BTW, here is what the plan looked like after piecing it together before edits and clean up [pic 005]. Quite a stark contrast.
Also attached here a Joe Ott add [pic 003] from Feb 1943 Fly Aces, that shows the Grumman Avenger as the main model. I thought you might like to add it to the web page.
Thanks.
Roger"

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
