About this Plan
De Bruyere C1. Free flight scale model for rubber power,. Wingspan 27 in.
Direct submission to Outerzone.
Quote: "De Bruyere Plan 27” Span Rubber Powered “Pusher” Free Flight Model drawn by Tom Akery, 5 AUG 2025.
History: The de Bruyère C 1 was a prototype French single seat pusher canard Fighter of unusual design produced during World War I. The sole example built crashed on its first flight, and development terminated. Design and development Developed by Marcel de Bruyere, the C 1 was a single-bay biplane with staggered equal-span wings and inverted V-struts. An all-moving one piece canard controlled pitch, while roll control was provided by unusual full chord tip ailerons on the upper wing --Wikipedia
CONSTRUCTION: WING: The wing is constructed using the Dave Rees’ sliced rib construction technique. This technique builds a very light and strong wing. Mike Stuart has a tutorial on this technique on his excellent site. Here’s a link to the tutorial: https://www.ffscale.co.uk/rees.htm The original plane had no dihedral in the top and lower wings, but I would recommend adding 1 inch dihedral under each wing tip. Both wings are built using this method. The
lower wing passes under the fuselage and touches at mid-point on the leading edge. I suggest building a jig from 1/8” foam board 2x4 foot (I get mine from the Dollar Store). I get the dimensions from the plan and build a jig support for the wings to the fuselage alignments. Tom Hallman shows how this is done in his video Building the Beech Twin Staggerwing, episode #7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHvJr5voVUw&t=961s
HORIZONTAL STAB: The HZ stab is a canard on this model and is made from 3/32” sheet balsa and sanded to an airfoil shape. This is probably the easiest HZ stab I’ve used in my plans. I would try to keep it at +2 degrees in relationship to the wings.
FUSELAGE. The fuselage is built using a jig made from the 1/8” foam board again. Tom Hallman has a great video showing the use of this jig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUYY1dqfH8
The formers are made of 1/16” sheet balsa. Because of the unique shape and alignment of the fuselage, you’ll note the angle of the fuselage in relationship to the wings and canard. The alignment has a lot to do with the pusher arrangement. The three “P1, P2 and P3 are of 1/8” balsa and note the sanding of the P3 former to set the prop angle. I’ll leave you to use your favorite prop block and prop construction. The ROT for the prop size is 1/3 the wingspan to start. This is one of the most unusual aircraft of WWI. I just had to try to design a plan for it. I haven’t build this yet and from my experience with canard there are some challenges that must be overcome.

ScaleType: This (oz16222) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Bruyère_C_1
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Model a plane that flew 25ft up, then crashed? Been there, done thatDesmond - 21/08/2025
Funny thing is: I got "The big Book of Fighters", a huge and comprehensive encyclopedia about every aircraft that was built to chase other aircraft. The only prerequisite being that they had really flown, no matter how short the distance. The De Bruyere is entlisted in it, because it did, but only just.

Tom, Like you I like the odd ball aircraft. I have been wanting to draft up a plan for myself of the Ursinus/Gotha Seaplane WD10, but have not got around to it yet. While thinking of the long list of models I want to build from your stable of plans I thought, hemm, I wonder if Tom would think that the Ursinus/Gotha Seaplane WD10 is quirky enough for him to draw a plan set up. What do you think is the Ursinus/Gotha Seaplane WD10 enough of an odd ball for your tastes? Would you want to do your magic and draft one up? I would love to add it to my loooong list of Akery plans to build. Thanks.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
