About this Plan

Jr Skylark EP with Ailerons. Radio control sport model. Wingspan 37-1/8 in, wing area 244 sq in, for electric power with Park 370 brushless motor.

Note the Jr Skylark (oz5685) was a Carl Goldberg kit first released circa 1964. This here is a later redrawn version for electric with 4 channel RC, dated 2025.

Note this here is a variant by Jim Zare of his previous Jr Skylark EP (oz16174) plan, which was a 3 channel design, with no ailerons.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "The plan was modified to show ailerons. This was primarily changing the wing ribs and adding provisions for the aileron servos. I fitted the new wing to the fuselage developed early in this thread. The ready to fly weight of the model with the new aileron wing is 16-1/4 oz.

It now will do just about every maneuver. It will snap roll, slow roll, spin and fly inverted as well as the usual loops and Immelmann’s. I have had trouble with knife edge but that’s not my favorite maneuver anyway.

With the three channel version I flew quite conservatively, usually at 1/2 throttle or less. Flight times were 10 to 12 minutes. With the full house Jr. Skylark I tend to fly at near full throttle enjoying the aerobatic capabilities. Flight times are reduced to about 7 minutes.

It glides great and turns well with ailerons at low speeds even with the dihedral shown on the plan. I fly on grass and have had no issues with the aileron servos other than some grass clippings."

Update 12/8/2025: Replaced this plan with a minor revision, showing correct motor now, thanks to Jim Zare.

Quote: "Steve, I modified the plan by showing the correct motor and battery as used in 2025. This is the Badass 2005-1960 and not the Eflite Park 370 from 2011. The Eflite motor works but it required 3 cells and the battery location is different. The revised pdf is attached. Sorry for adding extra work for you.
Jim"

Looks like a nice little fun build. Thanks for posting it. What is the thickness of the fuselage sides? I've scanned the plan over multiple times and cannot seem to find that information.

I would suggest 3/32" Balsa. The nose doublers are 3/32" and on the plan top view plan they match the thickness of the side. You could go for lighter 1/8" without any issues I would think, if you prefer.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
