FUSELAGE CONSTRUCTION: Once again I use the ladder jig for fuselage construction making each rung of the ladder to place the fuselage formers in place using the demarcation lines on the former to place them on the rungs. I add a wing saddle between formers “C” and “E” removing the lower portion of former “D” . Adding stringers one at a time on one side then going to the other side for matching stringer.

WING CONSTRUCTION: Wing construction is the Dave Rees’ sliced rib style construction. Wing tips are made using 3/32” balsa sheet. When I first started building the sliced ribs I actually sliced the ribs from 1/16” sheet using a jig I made from hobby sticks that looked like tongue depressor the doctor uses. I printed a paper pattern using Word and a picture scaled to size needed. I then glued it to the hobby stick and using an Exacto knife cut out the rib shape. You’ll find sever light passes cuts these hard wood stick rather than heavy pressure trying to cut in one pass. Once this is done I sanded the curved edge smooth and use this to cut a second stick. I then glued the two stick together leaving a 1/16” space from the curved edge. I then cut the shape of the upper rib in the sheet balsa at the bottom of the sheet I’d be using to cut the sliced ribs from. This allowed me to place the rib patter on the sheet 1/16” up from the bottom and cut out the ribs quickly. Stickandtissue.com has a tutorial on this: https://www.stickandtissue.com/forum/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1567628106/1#1

EMPENNAGE CONSTRUCTION: The horizontal stab is built from 3/32” sq and sheet balsa, flat on the building board. An additional rib topper using 3/32” strip over the ribs and sanded to airfoil helps to add stiffening to the stab to keep warps to a minimum. The vertical stab fin/rudder is built “In the Air” the outline is built first flat on the board then the vertical spar is added and the 1/32”x1/8” ribs are glued over the spar and to the L.E. and T.E. giving the vertical surface some body rather than a flat surface. I must credit this style to Chris Starleaf who posted his builds on Small Flying Arts and Hippocketaeronautics sites. Thanks Chris for this idea.

    ScaleType: This (oz16194) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenal_VB_10
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.
    Corrections? Use the correction form to tell us the new/better ScaleType link we should be using. Thanks.

A comment rather than a correction: there are no ribs shown.
Cannot expect performance match the prototype...

I think that's deliberate. See Tom's notes on the construction method. As I see it there is only one airfoil shape used, and the actual shape is not critical. If you see what I mean. The link that Tom has included to S&T shows you pics of this kind of construction.

My apologies Gents, I usually use the Clark "Y" airfoil for general shape. It's a nice flat bottom airfoil. I have a pattern for actual sliced ribs from my Do-335 wing, see Dornier Do 335 (oz13875). With the sliced rib or as Mike Stuart's tutorial (formed rib) sliced from the molded sheet. For different size ribs-the length of the rib is trimmed from the trailing edge to fit the length. Hope this is clear.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
