About this Plan

Sopwith Camel F1. Radio control scale model WWI fighter biplane. Wingspan 930 mm.

Quote (google-translated): "A pocket-sized Fighter aircraft. Sopwith Camel F1, by Vladimir Caha.

The Sopwith Camel F1 was the successor to the well-known Sopwith Pup, improved in many respects, and was used as a fighter and ground attack aircraft from mid-1917 onward. The aircraft received the nickname 'Camel' because of the hump on the nose of the fuselage, which housed a twin machine gun. The Camel was not an aircraft for beginners, but in the hands of experienced pilots, it demonstrated superior maneuverability and combat power, earning it an almost legendary reputation.

Even with a small model like this, you should only begin work after thoroughly studying the plans and instructions. Good preparation always pays off during construction.

The plans can be used to tentatively mark out the intended RC components and any necessary modifications that may arise if a different engine, fuel tank, etc. are to be used. All components. The model's parts are indicated and numbered in the plan. The building material and the dimensions of the components (in millimeters) are also given.

Fuselage: First, the two fuselage side panels T1 are prepared from 2 mm balsa. They are reinforced at the front with the 0.8 mm plywood parts T2. The 4x4 mm balsa strips T3 are glued over the reinforcement and along the fuselage sides.

The engine bulkhead is created by gluing the two parts T21 and T5 together. The wedge-shaped support T26 is placed at the front of the engine bulkhead and ensures the correct lateral draft and camber of the engine. Now think about the cutout for the muffler. Glue the T35 strip to the bottom of T5 and sew and glue the T32 snap fasteners (used to attach the engine cowling) as shown in the drawing. Drill the holes in the engine bulkhead for attaching the upper baklachin strut K51 and all the holes for the engine mounts, fuel lines, and engine throttle as shown in the drawing.

Glue the fuselage sides to the engine bulkhead and bulkhead T7. Glue the fuselage bulkheads T10, T11, and T12 together from 2x8 mm balsa strips and the half bulkheads for the fuselage spine as shown in the drawing. Then join the ends of the fuselage sides and glue in the bulkheads T10, T11, and T12. Ensure symmetry!

At the fuselage end, glue support plate T19 with the sewn and glued tail skid P11 in place, and reinforce the fuselage end from the inside with T27 made of 2 mm balsa. Cover the underside of the fuselage with T20 made of 2 mm balsa. Sew and glue tube T34, into which the front undercarriage wire will later be inserted, to the engine bulkhead with wire. Glue bulkhead T6 with the sewn and glued canopy struts 1(52) into the fuselage. Then glue bulkhead T8 with reinforcement T9 made of 2 mm plywood and the support plate T22 made of 4 mm plywood..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
