About this Plan

Chuperosa. Radio control sailplane model. Wingspan 59 in, wing area 413 sq in. Uses a foam core wing.

Note this plan shows choice of two wing layouts, polyhedral for 2 channel RC, or straight wing with ailerons for 3 channels.

The Chuperosa (oz16065) was published in RCM Jan 1988. This here is the plan as kitted by Culpepper Models.

Quote: "Chuperosa HLG from Culpepper Models. Glider fans, this is one of the finest kits on the market. We can say this with confidence because we have built several Chuperosas and have hundreds of fun-filied hours of flight time on them. Mel Culpepper is a perfectionist and his attention to detail has brought a gem to the modelling world. The 'Chup' as we affectionately call it, is a very complete kit. Mel includes everything from excellent balsa right down to an antenna tube! All that you need to finish this baby is covering and glue. Also, the instruction manual and the plans are of outstanding quality. LeRoy Satterlee, the designer of the Chup, should be included in the modelling hall of fame for this effort.

If you don't believe us, then talk to Rusty Shaw. Rusty won a NATS handlaunch class with a Chuperosa. His bird was sporting the S7037 airfoil, and Rusty built up the stab to save as much weight as possible. Clearly, the Chup can tango with the best.

The proof of the pudding is in the flying, and the Chup flies great! Perhaps the most compelling reason to own one, however, is its versatility. The Chup will fly in the lightest of lift yet it will also fly in some fairly strong winds with a little weight in the belly. The poly version can be flown by the most novice of pilots, and the aileron version makes a fine first aileron ship. There is a little bit of twist built into the foam wing core, and the Chuperosa just will not tip stall. The best thing about a Chup is that if you take it with you to the slope or field you KNOW that you will get in some flight time. While others struggle to stay up in light lift, you will be staying up with no problem.

WOW, A COMBO VERSION! The Chup Combo combines the standard Chup HLG with a two-meter wing kit. This gives you two airplanes in one! Both wings fit on the same great Chup fuse, so you have even greater flying versatility! Also, the two-meter version is a wonderful airplane to fly. Both the handlaunch and 2-meter Chuperosas feature a foam wing construction.

Stan: Many people call and ask us why we like the Chuperosa so much. My personal feeling is that it that it is largely due to the versatility it offers. The E214 airfoil will float with the best of them and offers outstanding thermal performance. The newer SD7037 airfoil often a more aggressive speed range and the best glide of any Selig airfoil. The aileron version of the Chup makes a great aileron trainer, but if you are partial to polyhederal wings, then the poly version is a piece of cake to fly. Also, the Chup will fly in very light conditions as well as in pretty stiff breezes. In terms of strength, the construction of the fuselage is unique in that it uses a crass strut boom, offering light weight and extreme strength for a ship in this class. The Chup surely is a ship that everyone should own..."

It is worth noting that this plan features the Selig 4061 and SD 7037 airfoils, while the other (oz16065) only features the Eppler 214.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
