About this Plan

Hawker Horsley. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 27 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Steve and Mary, Martin Lavender (The Surrey Aeronut) asked me to try my hand at what he called a big single engine aircraft, The Hawker Horsley. Well I've not really heard of the Horsley and it is a very unique looking aircraft. I usually try to stay away from biplanes, but just for Martin I gave it the good ole college try!!!

I found a nice 3 view to base my drawing on and it also had two other derivatives with the Leopard engine and the Merlin engine variants, so I included the noses for each of those types.
Not drawing many biplanes, I went to the NFFS (National Free Flight Society) site to their technical library for some insights to biplanes. I recommend checking it out: https://www.freeflight.org/betterdocs-search/?n=biplane%20incidence&cat=565
I've used the suggested airfoil still using the Rees' sliced rib wing construction. So both wings are constructed in this manner. The spars will be much thinner due to the new airfoil. The upper wing has just a small amount of dihedral (1/2") , but the lower wing has a greater amount of dihedral. I've listed 2" under each tip for it. I showed laminated wing tips of 3 laminations of 1/32"x3/32" and then rounded after they've dried.

I used the box fuselage construction with formers on top of the box for the upper shape of the fuselage. Note the cockpit has an unusal shape for the pilot and rear gunner. I didn't specify what to uses to form the shape of the fuselage in this area but personally I'd use 1/32" or 1/20" balsa for this area and cut out a pattern from the plan after the thin balsa was in place.

This is not a beginners plan for a biplane. I'm sure Martin has some experience modeling to even request such a plan!
So this is a plan that has not been built and I mention to adjust the struts to fit once the wings are ready to join to the fuselage. NFFS has a nice couple of articles on mounting the wings as well as a jig to assist in this and get the incidence correct.
Martin, I hope this plan will serve for your needs or be a starting point. Enjoy.

Regards,
Tom Akery/Sky9pilot

P.S. My site FreeFlightArchive.com will not be up after the end of May. Things are just to expensive and my financial partner has decided to venture into other things. So thanks to all who have searched the site. Best regards to all."

ScaleType: This (oz16061) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Horsley
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Martin should be pleased.

So I guess you're now working on the Rockwell XFV-12A plan?

Hi Tom, many thanks for drawing up the Hawker Horsley so quick after my recent request! The plan certainly fills a void from the many Hawker aircraft plans that are available. I look forward to building it, and will send in a photo or two to Steve and Mary once finished. Kind regards Martin (The Surrey Aeronut).

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
