About this Plan

Bede BD8. Control line profile scale model, for brushless electric power. Wingspan 24 in. Uses foam construction.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Dear Steve and Mary, Ever since I saw Denis Tapsfield’s gorgeous 90 powered Bede BD8 (oz6816) in the July 1982 issue of Radio Modeller, I’d been wanting to make (a smaller) one. Made pencil sketches over the years but got no further.

Then in 2023 I got back into control line after a gap of over 50 years, with a Babe Bee powered Phantom Mite, photos of which you kindly published at Phantom Mite (oz1404). At about the same time, while getting some Cox spares from Den’s Model Supplies, found that he had something called an EZEE timer, so got two of those.

Back home in India, I built a (sort of) BD-8, 25” span C/L model with an Emax 2822 and a 1000mah lipo. It flew just fine, but at 300gms was simply too heavy to stunt. So here is the revised one.

A semi scale profile BEDE BD-8 in Depron. Under 200gms, with TMotor AS2304/1800kv, 6x3 prop, a 360mah 3s lipo, and the EZEE timer. Power set to about 75w/13500rpm, start delay to 30 seconds and motor run to 1 minute via the timer.

The outline is fairly accurate 1/10 scale (though the wing is 24” instead of 23.2”!). The plan is drawn full size on A2 size paper.

Construction is so simple that it hardly needs instructions. The fuselage and spar are from 10mm Depron, stab/elevator from 5mm Depron, and wing from 2mm. And a piece of 3x4cm from 3mm balsa and ply for the firewall. Not apparent from the plan is that the wing is made from a 24”x12.5” sheet of 2mm or 1.5mm Depron, by bending gently at the leading edge (over, say, the edge of a table) with a little help from a heat gun. The trailing edge top and bottom can even be stuck together with double sided tape! CG is about 2cm from the leading edge.

I’d feel greatly honoured if this finds a place on Outerzone. Regards. K.K.Iyer In India"

very nice plan ...
what length of lines do you fly with ?
Thx, Joerg

@Joerg
Test flown on 25 feet Dacron.
Like a trainer on 75w.
Next Sunday will raise power to 100+w and try on 30’ lines.
Regards
Iyer

Does the wing have ribs? any plans for wing construction?
Don Kadous - 20/05/2025
The construction of the wing is so simple it doesn't need a plan. The wing is made from a sheet of 2 or 1.5mm Depron 24"x12.5" wide. The wing has a spar of 10mm thick depron as indicated on the plan.

That's right, there are no ribs. Just a spar as shown, and as detailed in the text. Depron skin is wrapped around the inner spar, that's all there is to the wing. I guess the exact airfoil shape you end up with is not critical.

UPDATE on the Bede BD8. 10mm Depron is a far cry from 1/4” balsa for a profile fuselage. See crack just ahead of cabin [pic 010]. So added 2mm x 0.5mm carbon fibre strip reinforcement to both sides and bottom [pics 010-012].

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
