About this Plan

Hellion. Control line speed model.

Quote: "This Class A speed job combines high speed with simple construction, maintenance and control. And, it does this while using common, easily worked materials in a way that is strong yet light - the original model weighs 8 ounces. Can anyone ask for more?

The basic design is conventional with the exception of a coupled pushrod. The pushrod permits us to have a one-piece rear section of the fuselage, giving maximum strength while allowing quick accessibility to the innards.

The engine in our original Hellion is an old-type McCoy 19 with only slight modifications. The cooling fins have been cut down 1/16 in on the sides and the exhaust stack has been cut off flush. A Dooling needle valve and a homemade right-angle jet ori-fice complete the installation.

FUSELAGE : Start construction by spot-cementing two 1 x 2 x 12 inch hard balsa blocks together and copying the outlines on these from the plans, noting that the parting line is 3/32 off center. Saw to the outlines and carve to the proper cross-sections, leaving some excess at the nose. Finish with No.00 sandpaper.

Taper the maple-motor mounts, notch them for the engine lugs, and notch the inside for the crankcase, leaving 1 in between the mounts. Do not omit tapering as this contributes to the fuselage strength. Drill the mounts and install the engine bolts, soldering their heads to a brass strip. Bolt the mounts to the engine, carefully align them, and attach formers No.1 and No.2 with cement and wood screws. The dolly pin hole should not be drilled yet.

Next, split the fuselage apart and hollow it to the thickness shown. Carefully cut away the sides to fit the motor mounts and, with the engine still in place, cement the engine assembly onto the fuselage. Then wrap the fuselage tightly together with at least three feet of rubber. A temporary spacer should be inserted at the rear to keep the mounts from pulling together. Let the fuselage dry over night.

WING: Cut the wing from 1/4 in medium sheet balsa and taper it to 1/8 at the tips. Insert the maple reinforcement in the wing and drill it for the bellcrank bolt.

The bellcrank is cut down from a small Veco bellcrank and the bearing is countersunk for the flat-head bolt that holds it in place. Note the bends (in the side view) to permit clearance.

Now groove the bottom of the right wing for the 1/16 aluminum tubes. Cement them in and fill the remaining space with plastic wood. The center of the wing is hollowed for free control-rod action. Then carve the wing to indicated airfoil and finish it with No. 00 sandpaper..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
