Grumman G21 Turbo-Goose. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 36 in.

Quote: "Steve and Mary, I was asked if I had a plan of my Grumman G-21a Goose. At the time of my build I had used a three view off the net enlarged to 36" span. I then used the lost foam technique to build the fuselage and nacelles for this flying boat. I've always loved this plane ever since I'd flown on one to Catalina Island many years ago. It was a great adventure.

The lost foam technique is similar to the solid models I made in my youth. Where we took patterns of the profile and top view of the fuselage and carved a balsa block into shape and finished it off sanding it to final shape. The wings being made of sheet balsa back then.

This lost foam technique requires the shaping of the fuselage in the same manner of the solid models of the past. I made sure to keep the patterns 1/16" smaller on each side so the finished project would be using the 1/16" balsa stringers around the foam pattern to make the model.

I also found a neat trick to keep the static electricity of sanding the foam to a minimum. I don't remember exactly where but I had heard that anti-static dryer sheets could be rubbed over the foam as it was being sanded to shape and the foam particles wouldn't cling to your hands and sanding block and could be easily blown away from the block.

Tom Akery is very ingenious at building really lightweight structures. It would be great if he could do a Spitfire as most of other designers efforts are so poor.

You can wet-sand extruded styrene foam, too. That really keeps the dust down.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
