About this Plan

Pipit. Free flight sport model for rubber power. Wingspan 450 mm.

Quote: "KIT D101. Andercraft Pipit. Building Instructions:

The Pipit is named for a small bird found in its various species throughout Southern Africa. They range from the more common Longbilled Pipit, which has a fairly drab brown colour to the extremely rare Golden Pipit, with its bright yellow plumage, while the Longclawed variety also has bright flashes of red. Accordingly, the model may be coloured as bright as can be!

Like its namesake, you will find this model an excellent flyer, suitable for the beginner and expert alike. Please follow the instructions and you should encounter few problems, even if this is your first model.

Before starting to build the kit, read the instructions, identifying the parts as described. To build this model, you will require a FLAT building board, at least as large as the plan, able to have pins driven into the surface or have sufficient, suitable weights to hold the parts in place while they are being held together. Cover the plan with greaseproof paper or plastic wrap to orevent the parts sticking to it.

To assemble the kit, use either balsa cement, cementing all joints first, or alaphatic resin glue. Pre-cementing means that the glue is first applied to all end grain surfaces, allowed to dry, penetrating the grain, then applying a second coat before glueing in place. This is essential on all vertical and cross spacers. Cyano, while the fastest and lightest is not recommended for beginners or for the fuselage sides, due to the possibility of joining them permanently together. Whichever glue is used, always use the minimum needed for a good join, to keep weight down. To avoid loss of parts only cut out those as required, except for the wing ribs, which will be dealt with later.

FUSELAGE: Select four 1.5 x 1.5 strips of equal stiffness for the four longerons which form the basic structure. Pin the upper and lower down on plan with pins on either side of the strips NOT THROUGH THEM. For the accurate placing of pins along the straight lines, a hacksaw blade may be placed over plan, with pins placed against the straight side, ensuring they are accurately placed. Also pin cabin upper strip in place above upper longeron. Glue FS and motor peg mount in place, then add all vertical spacers from 1.5 x 1.5 strip, the rearmost being cut from 3 x 1.5. Cut these vertical and diagonal spacers slightly overlength, then sand down to a perfect fit, an emery fingernail board being ideal for this purpose. Add gussets where shown.

When completely dry, build a second side over first, again using glue sparingly to avoid unnecessary sticking of the sides together. Set aside to dry completely, preferably overnight. Remove structure from plan and using a double edged razor blade between the two sides, part at the various joints, it will be found easiest if the razor blade is swung back and forth until the glue bond is broken. Cut all the same sized cross braces to the same length as F2. Support the fuselage frames over the plan view, ensuring they are square to the building board and glue F2 and bottom cross braces in place..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
