Quote: "Attached please find the two page plan set for the Concept Models Travel Air 2000. These were scanned from the original plans for the model and then printed. From a quick check of the printed copy it appears the pdf dimensions are reasonably correct.

I also have the 6 pages of build instructions and will try to get those scanned in the next couple of days [done now, see below].

Thanks for operating and maintaining a really excellent site for those of us who still engage in the hobby beyond buying something, taking it out of a box and putting a battery in. Regards,"

Update 4/4/2025: Added kit instructions, thanks to DaveRamsey.

Quote: "The Great Classic 1925 Travel Air 2000. The Travel Air is a Sport Scale Model of the famous classic Travel Air 2000. Because it is a Sport Scale model, it is only a look alike, meaning there are deviations from exact scale. The most significant deviation is the airfoil. Also, the tail surfaces are enlarged, the nose moment changed slightly and the landing gear moved a bit in relation to the bottom wing. All these changes were made to improved the flying characteristics of the model.

The fuselage is basically built around a box made up of two fuselage sides, the F-2 and F-3 formers, and the cockpit floor. The tail surfaces are simple sheet construction, with no complications. All four wing panels are basically the same in construction, with simple, minor modifications made after each panel is completed.

All four cabane struts are identical, simplifying installation and wing alignment. Tried and proven biplane design parameters are incorporated, insuring stability, performance, good stall characteristics and ease of flight trimming.

Fuselage: Fit all parts before assembling. Mark both fuselage sides for postion of the F-2 and F-3 formers. The back edge of the F-2 former should be flush with the front edge of the forward cabane mount notch, and perpendicular to the top edge of the fuselage side. Then, using a wing saddle as a gauge mark the positon of the F-3 former, also perpendiculer to the top.

The top 1/2 x 1/4 brace should be located 1/4 in below the top edge of the fuselage side. Notice that the right fuselage side should have 1/16 in trimmed off the nose before beginning assembly. This will provide the necessary right thrust.

Install the nose bracing, wing saddles, and stab support. Add the triangular 1/2 in thick nose blocks.

Cut the necessary holes in F-2 and F-3 to suit your equipment, then install the two formers, cockpit floor, and cabane mounts on one fuselage side. When set, add the second fuselage side, pull together at the tail, add the two F-4 pieces, and line up assembly over the top view on the plan. Masking tape works well to hold everything together. Take your time and align everything carefully. Square alignment is very important throughout construction of the model.

With fuselage upright, install the cockpit cowl and stringer formers, F2a, F-3a and F-4a. Join the two cockpit cowl halves together at the front and the middle and hold with tape, then moisten top surface with water and wrap over cowl formers and hold with tape while glue sets. Leave half the thickness of former F-3a exposed. See plan side view..."

ScaleType: This (oz15941) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

I built this model 5 years ago after letting it sit in storage since 1979. It performs very well with the installed O.S. 52 4stroke. I will say that anyone intending to build the kit should they come across one that it is very complete, BUT! Check to be sure you engine will fit within the nose structure, I wound up having to move the firewall back almost one inch to accommodate even an old KB40, neither would an O.S. 46 neither an even shorter O.S. 52 4-stroke would fit. Also, the light ply fuselage sides as given in the kit are not correctly cut for the lower wing saddle as provided. If not corrected the lower wing incidence will be too positive.

There is a good build thread on RCGroups by warhead_71 see https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1444193-Concept-Models-Travel-Air-biplane showing this kit being converted for electric power, with lots of good pics (although it's also at the same time converted to look like the 4000 model with radial engine, so different styling), thanks to JeffGreen for noting this.

Photos of the Concept Models Travelair 2000 [main pic, 008-011]. I lightened the model by replacing the 1/4 inch sheet tail feathers with the built up open frame, cutting out sections of the liteply sides and lightning holes in all ribs. I live at 5,000 ft so I added a bit more power with an O.S. 52 4 stroke, all efforts combined turned it into a very aerobatic model for being sport scale.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
