About this Plan

Vcelka. Free flight glider model. A1 class glider. Wingspan 1478 mm.

Quote (google-translated): "BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS: The Vcelka [Bee] was originally created in 1975 as a simple school model for young members of the ODPM clubs in Mlada Boleslav. At that time, the A3 category did not yet exist, so we were looking for a model that students would build and, above all, fly in competitions after they had mastered the modular A1 Dana.

The club leaders had the following requirements for the model: a rectangular wing so that students would not have to interpolate the ribs; a simple but strong fuselage that could withstand a significant impact without damage; good flight characteristics so that students could compete with the model.

The Vcelka met these requirements so well that we used the proven elements of its construction and the experience from building and flying it in the construction of other models, many of which have already been published. The current version of the Vcelka differs from the original in the fuselage structure, modification of the main wing spar, use of a side hook and related modification of the vertical tail. These changes were proposed by the head of the ODPM Mladá Boleslav club Václav Jiránek and he verified them in terms of construction and flight with his sons Jan and Martin.

The fuselage has a T1 head cut from a linden board or hard balsa with a jigsaw. When cutting, do not forget the hole for the load, or for the timer.

The tail spar is sandwiched, made of two T5 spruce strips and a T4 balsa strip. We select high-quality spruce strips, with straight, dense strips, and sand them on the sides where they will be glued to the balsa strip. L balsa strips ti. 10 mm we cut the strip of the required width and plan and sand it to a bevel so that at the end it has tI 7 mm. We glue the T5 strips to it with Hercules, we pull the clothespins all over and hang it in a vertical position until the glue dries. By hanging it we prevent any twisting of the part. After drying, we plan and sand the tail beam blank to the appropriate shape and glue it into the cutout in the head.

If we want to equip the model with a hook for a circular tow, we cut a recess for it in the fuselage. Finally, we glue the plywood side panels T2 on both sides of the head and after the glue dries, we round the edges of the head and sand the fuselage cleanly. Glue the plywood storage board VOP T6 and the T7 pad made of hard balsa, 3 mm thick, to the end of the fuselage. Paint the finished fuselage five to six times with clear zapon nitro varnish; sand each coat of varnish with fine sandpaper after it has dried. After painting, the nose can be sprayed with colored nitro varnish; to save weight, we prefer to leave the tail beam in the color of the wood.

Cut the vertical tail S out of harder balsa tI 2 mm and sand it with finer sandpaper to a symmetrical profile. Paint the sanded SOP five times with clear zapon nitro varnish, lightly sand each coat after it has dried. If we want to use the side hook (which is drawn in the drawing), we cut off the rudder flap with a razor blade, which we attach to the fin until the model is flown with two hinges made of flexible aluminum sheet, for example from the cap of a milk or cream bottle. We glue the hinges into the notches in the fin and flap, carefully made with a razor blade or scalpel.

If we intend to fly with the 'tear' system hook or with a hook for a circular tow, we cut off the rudder to the lower edge of the SUP and round the edges of the cut surface on both parts with sandpaper. We cut off the lower edge of the rudder about 2 mm wide. We paint the cut areas several times with clear nitro varnish and sand them. We glue the control lever made of plywood thickness..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
