About this Plan

Svihak. Free flight glider model. F3 class glider. Wingspan 810 mm.

Quote (google-translated): "Every year, when starting a club, instructors of youth model flying clubs are faced with the question: Where to start? Although many school model plans have already been published, they do not always meet the specific conditions of individual clubs.

The management of LMK Bytex Vratislavice nad Nisou therefore announced a competition among the instructors of its clubs for a category A3 glider model for complete beginners. When designing a model, the participants in the competition had to take into account the availability of materials, and if possible, also that even a poorly built model would retain decent flight characteristics.

One of the successful models that emerged from this competition is the Svihak. Its very simple construction guarantees that even a complete beginner can successfully complete it. The construction will be greatly facilitated and accelerated by the use of ready-made plywood wing ribs and VOP, originally intended for models of category A1, which are supplied to clubs by order of LMK Liberec.

The Svihak is of course not a top competition 'super' model, as evidenced by its weight, which significantly exceeds the lowest permitted limit. (After all, this is not even the case with a school glider). However, it has advantages that beginners will appreciate: It is easy to fly, it is sufficiently stable in glide even when towed on a line and it is robust enough to withstand even harder landings and impacts that young modelers will be exposed to while flying. At the same time, its performance is such that it can also be used in competitions. The model's construction and its flight characteristics were tested on a number of specimens made by members of the rings at LMK Bytex Vratislavice nad Nisou, practically always with good results.

Fuselage: Cut the head (including the hole for the load) from a spruce, linden or alder board so that the wood strips are oriented along its length. Clean the head around the circumference with sandpaper with a grit of about 200, glued to a so-called sanding board measuring approximately 100 x 200 mm.

The tail beam is made of spruce strips T2, between which we glue balsa reinforcements with Kanagom or Herkules. We make sure that the strips are straight, with dense straight strips, without knots. Secure the tail beam blank with clothespins until the glue dries and hang it in a vertical position. Then we sand it with sandpaper and glue it into the cutout in the head.

In the appropriate reinforcements and in the head, we drill holes with a diameter of 2 or 3 mm with a hand drill, or in an emergency with a drill, into which we insert and glue the T5 tie pins, sanded to the specified diameter from bamboo chips. Glue the sidewalls T6 to the opening for the load with epoxy, which we cut out with a jigsaw from plywood, and bevel their straight edge and clean with sandpaper. Then sand the front part of the head completely around the perimeter and round its edges with sandpaper.

We cut out the wing bed T7 from plywood, sand it and glue a cut of spruce strip T8 to its front edge from below. Glue spruce strips no to the longitudinal edges of the bed from above. Sand the bed completely, glue it to the fuselage with epoxy and secure it with two screws..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
