About this Plan

Vroompire. Radio control sport model for electric power using 2x Speed 400 motors. Twin boom layout. Wingspan 50 in.

Quote: "Get your teeth into this new light electric twin. Vroompire, by Chris Reid.

The aim in designing Vroompire was to build a light twin using up some carbon fibre kite rod left over from a parkflyer. The original used Graupner Speed 400, 6 v motors. and Gunther props, with 7 x Sanyo N-1700 SCR cells. The weight came out at 36 oz.. including 14 oz for the battery.

Wing: The plan shows only one outer wing, but both can be built on the one drawing. Remember to fit the aileron elements and tips to make a RIGHT and LEFT version.

Begin by constructing the outer wings. Cover the plan with something glue resistant, and pin down the LE, spars, and notched TE. Glue (I used thin cyano everywhere except for the LE sheeting) the ribs into position. They are all vertical EXCEPT the inboard one, which leans towards the wingtip. Use the plan template to set the angle. Slot in the top spars and fix. Repeat for the second wing.

The ailerons are lengths of 1 x 1/4 in TE. The aileron hinges are Mylar, and the TE needs reinforcing with scrap 1/4 sheet at the hinge points. The gap between the spars is webbed, in the inner rib bay only, with 1/8 grain vertical sheet balsa such that it is flush with the REAR of the spars. Finally, add the gussets, tips, and fit the 1/4 x 3/8 strip between the ribs to carry the aileron control wires. Sand the LE to shape before adding the 1/32 balsa LE sheeting to top and bottom.

The centre section is similar, with rib thickness varying according to the stresses. All of them need two holes near the LE and the rear spars, for the motor wiring and aileron control wires. The TE is a piece of 1-1/4 x 5/16 balsa. Web all the gaps between the main spars with 1/8 sheet balsa flush with the REAR of the spars. The rear spars are webbed in the two outer bays only.

Sand the completed centre section to shape. Next, glue the 5 mm dowel motor pegs to their ribs, to sit on top of the main spar and LE. If necessary, notch the LE slightly to ensure the pegs sit parallel with the bottom of the wing. A small wedge of balsa on top of each peg increases the glue area..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
