About this Plan

P-80 Shooting Star. Radio control scale model, for electric ducted fan (EDF). Wingspan 50 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Dear Steve, In the 1990s I was building my own selfmade electric impeller including complete P80 Shooting Star design with mouldings for fletcher and Lockheed tiptanks. The Lockheed one was never build and never flown, see pictures of 1999 with the selfmade design of the Shooting Star and the Impeller itself [pics 005-007].

Just by coincidence a friend of mine, Gero, was talking with me when I redesigned the Brian Lewis Sipa 200 Mini Jet (oz15857) and I had a brief look to the moulds, that rest in a corner of the attic. I took them out and decided to make two new planes for us, Gero and me, but with a tiny new bought impeller: Wemotec HET 2-20. The performance in the old days was very good, so with the latest design of the wemotec we could expect much more.

Two fuselages were made from 4 layers of 50gr Glas and ductings especially for the Wemotec. This impeller was flange cut and got a new radial flange for easy assy. The wings were redesigned, like the original ones but an extra strak profile for more improving and later aerodynamical separation, keeping the flow on the ailerons.

During the build it came through that Gero will build the version with the fletcher tanks, the one I had in the 1990s, and myself I more liked to test the Lockheed tanks. Could be a problem to land on, but to keep the weight low without any mechanism I add the tanks with magnetic, so they will be pushed away in the landing easily.

So enjoy the plan, fotos and CAD. The fuselage is so old, it was before CAD, but it's easy to build with the help of similar plans or a 3 side view. Cheers, Matze"

Note this is a complex project, and so there is no simple conventional plan here, with eg fuselage formers etc. This project involves a lot of CAD design, 3D printing and moulds. See STP files and DXF cad files for more details.

ScaleType: This (oz15863) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_P-80_Shooting_Star
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Matze does it again!

A very interesting project but not really sure that it should be on this site? Sixty five years ago P. E. Norman provided all of the construction details, and building methods to produce a ducted fan Mig 15. This one doesn’t even provide a 3 view drawing. Discuss…
Richard Falconer - 24/02/2025
Granted, this is an unusual entry, in that there is no plan drawing here of the fuselage, the mould for the outer airframe (which is lost to time now). But I see great value in the files and the photos we do have here. The 3D modelling of the vents and ducting is priceless. I very much expect PE Norman would approve.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
