About this Plan

Brewster 340. Free flight scale model for rubber power. WIngspan 30 in.

Planfile includes full build instructions.

Quote: "Brewster 340 US Navy Dive Bomber. This model, the Brewster '340', is a replica flying scale model of the US Navy's latest bomber-fighter plane. Performance figures are strictly on the hush-hush list but it is known to have exceeded all previous planes of this type.

Study carefully all details and observe all notations on plans before starting to build your plane. Follow instructions step by step, refer constantly to drawings and photos. When cutting curved balsa parts such as formers, wing tips, tall surface outlines, otc, always cut the inside curve first. This helps to prevent the balsa from splitting. When pinning parts to drawing, never pin through the wood, but place pins on each side. It is advisable to tack your plan to a smooth drawing board anti then place a sheet of waxed paper over the plan to prevent the parts from sticking to it.

CONSTRUCTION OF FUSELAGE: Construction is begun by cutting the formers from the printed sheets of balsa wood. After all of them are cut, assemble fuselage half shells by placing 1/16 sq balsa strips on plans where they are marked top and bottom. Hold the longerons to proper curve with pins. The top longeron extends from former #1 to former #3, and from former #5 to the rear of the fuselage. The bottom longeron extends from former #1Ito the end of the fuselage. Glue half formers in place starting with 11 and working to the right. Make sure all formers are perpendicular to the plan. Add 1/16 x 1/8 master stringer. Allow to dry thoroughly. Remove from plan and cement remaining formers in their respective positions' attach master stringer of 1/16 x 1/8. Then glue remaining. 1/16 sq stringers into notches of formers, applying the ones that run the full length of the fuselage first. Cement balsa nose block and tall block and shape as shown. Build cockpit enclosure and gun turret. Cement wing supports WS in place.

WING: The wing is built directly over the waxed paper covered plans. Cut and sand all wing material to shape. Pin the trailing edge and rear spar in place. Insert all ribs in their respective places; note the angle of rib #1 on front view. Add front spar and leading edge. Attach landing gear in place minus wheels and diagonal brace.

TAIL SURFACES: The tall surfaces are built directly over the plans. All curved parts are cut from the 1/16 printed balsa shet. The stabilizer is made in two pieces while the rudder is of one piece construction. Note that the ribs of 1/16 x 1/6 have to be sanded to a streamline shape.

PROPELLER: Shape propeller blades and spinner to outline shown. Insert propeller blades 120 degrees apart. Add wire hook, washers, and hardwood nose button. Cement propeller securely in place. Now cement discs FP in position.

COVERING AND ASSEMBLING: Cover the entire top of the wing and on the bottom from the tip to rib #3. The fuselage is covered in its entirety, except for the section from F-2 to F-4 below the 1/16 x 1/8 master stringer. Now cement wing in place and after thoroughly dry, finish the covering of both the wing and fuselage. Cover tail surface. Spray lightly all covering with water to tighten paper. Apply two coats of banana oil to covering. Cover landing forms 1,0 and cement wheels in place. Cement tail surfaces in their respective positions. Add all details as shown on plan.

FLYING: First test glide the model to determine any driving or stalling tendencies. If the model dives, bend up the stabilizer, on the other hand if it stalls either add weight to the nose or bond down the stabilizer. After the proper gliding angle is obtained, power fly your model. Wind the rubber motor (4 strands) about 100 turns and launch directly Into the wind. Correct any diving or stalling by repeating method used in gliding.

We believe that when you have completed this flying scale model you will want to complete the 'American Defense Series'. Any reports or photographs you may care to send will be appreclated."

ScaleType: This (oz15765) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewster_SB2A_Buccaneer
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
