Owl (oz15740)
About this Plan
Owl. Free flight towline glider model. Wingspan 29 in.
Quote: "INTRODUCTION: The 'Snowy Owl', to give it its full name, was developed as a robust compact sailplane using ultra rapid constructional techniques and incorporating maximum prefabrication throughout. The model has been extensively tested in prototype form and is capable of a very gratifying performance.
CONSTRUCTION: Fuselage: Mark out the bulkhead positions F1-F8 on the inner faces of the fuselage sides. Fit F4 and F5 checking alignment over the plan elevation. Draw in the tail against a piece of 1/8 x 1/8. Fit F7 and F1 then F3, F6, F2, and F8 in the order stated; followed by the wing dowels.
Sheet the top and bottom of the fuselage with 1/16 sheet, keeping the grain longwise. The section under the wings is left open. Bend the tow hook to shape from a long pin, or scrap of 18/20 swg wire, and cement in position. Reinforce, inside, with a scrap of balsa. Fit the 3/32 x 3/32 windscreen supports and celluloid screen.
Laminate the Nose-block from formers N1-N5. To align, pierce N5 with a pin through the 'X'and place the other formers over it with their numbers upright. Cement NI-N5 securely together. When dry, cement N5 to F1 and shape to profile. Sandpaper the finished fuselage.
Tailplane and Fins: Shape the Tailplane and fins to airfoil section, as indicated on the plan. They should be very carefully sanded to their final profiles. Mark out the location positions on the inner surfaces of the fins, and cement in position, using a set square to check that they are perpendicular to the tailplane.
Wings: Cover the plan with a piece of wax paper, thus preventing parts from sticking to it The wings are made up in three sections comprising a centre section and two outer panels. The root ribs on the outer panels are canted inwards towards the tips to allow for the dihedral; this is done using the card template shown on the plan..."

Quote: "Hi Mary/Steve, Please find attached the plan, printwood and instructions, as well as pictures of the box and full kit of the Performance Kits Owl, a 29" wingspan free flight sailplane. The model was designed by Peter (O.F.W.) Fisher and sold as a kit through his company Performance Kits. Peter's records show that the model was first flown in June 1968, with kit being available the following year. I am also sending pictures of two very well finished models, which were built by Simon Rogers. Best wishes,
Mark Robinson"

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
