About this Plan

Hummel Rudi. Control line sport model.

Quote (google-translated): "Hummel Rudi was born out of the idea of creating a model that can be produced with little effort and that will at least bring a smile to the spectators' faces at a display flight event. The construction is relatively simple and easy to assemble.

We start with the main fuselage section. It is sawn out of medium-hard balsa with a thickness of 10 mm. After plastering, the beech engine mounts are glued in. Once the glue has dried, 1 mm plywood reinforcements are glued to the left and right of the front fuselage. It is best to use cold wood glue for this work. Then the wing bend reinforcement is fitted and glued in. The wing halves are attached to this. The resulting V-position looks good on this model. Despite the lack of lead in the outer surface, it keeps the lines taut during flight.

Now we can start building the wing. It is built in the traditional way on a simple slipway. The ribs are made from 2mm balsa except for rib A. Rib A, which is slightly bevelled, is made from 5mm balsa. Once the wing halves are fully assembled, everything is dried and sanded, the balsa between the main spars on ribs A and B is removed using a sharp knife and a key file.

The wing halves can now be put on the fuselage to determine how far rib A needs to be bevelled. Once this is done, it is properly glued. This type of attachment is somewhat simple, but due to the low mass of the Bumblebee it can even withstand head-on collisions with road asphalt. Then the space between rib A and rib 8 is covered with drawing cardboard at the top and bottom. This magnification makes covering much easier.

Now to the horizontal tail unit: This part is camouflaged as a flower and is made from medium-hard balsa. After sanding, the rudder lever is glued in and the front part of the horizontal tail unit is glued into the fuselage. The two halves of the tail unit are only connected by sewing after the paint has been completely applied. Once the shell has progressed to this point, it can be primed with tensioning varnish and then sanded. This process is repeated several times..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
