Drifter (oz15700)
About this Plan
Drifter. Indoor catapult glider model.
Quote: "Catapult glider model of the year. The Drifter set national records in both classes of Indoor Catapult Glider: Standard (for models with less than 12-inch projected wingspan and three-inch chord) and Unlimited (a bit of an oxymoron, because there is a limit - 100 square inches wing area).
Bob has long been a top competitor in Indoor and Out-door Free Flight, and his models are superbly crafted. And he has won 'majors' in high and low ceilings.
He was ecstatic when informed of his MOY award. That's great! I've worked really hard at Catapult Glider, trying to make it one of my favorite events - and now it is!
Bob's models would climb to roughly the height of the catwalk at Santa Ana (about 135 feet up, he estimates) on a loop of 1/4-inch rubber about seven inches long, "and stretched just as far as I can possibly make it go," he said. Longer loops of rubber were tried, but Bob felt he couldn't get enough stretch to make them worth using.
The models have to be trimmed very close to zero-zero, so they are pretty sensitive, he said. But they really are a lot of fun to fly.
Bob is currently working with Ron Wittman in an attempt to break the long-standing high-ceiling Indoor HLG record that Ron has held since 1973 - while he can still throw. He's looking to break that magic 1:30 barrier, and with some work and experimentation with airfoils. it can be done. It wouldn't be surprising to see some of this R&D spill over into Bob's Catapult efforts, too. "

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
