The Me-262 was the first warplane tp employ the turbojet as power to achieve operational status and what is more remarkable, this occurred over 29 years ago. It would have been operational sooner if not for the indecision in German High Command. Hitler wanted it used as a Blitz (Lightning) bomber, not as a fighter for which it was designed. Several thousand were built, but only a relative few flew in combat because of a fuel shortage in Germany during the last days of the war. The Me-282 did not have as large an influence on the course of WWII as it could have. It did, however, launch a new era of aeriel warfare.

The 34 ft long Me-262 had a wingspan of 42 ft. It weighed 14,000 lb fully loaded and could reach an altitude of 32,000 ft. Although faster than allied planes at the time, with a maximum speed. of 540 mph, it wasn't especially maneuverable. If our pilots evaded the first diving attack, they would almost certainly irunrive the encounter_.

CONSTRUCTION:FUSELAGE: The body is cut from 3/8 sheet balsa. Transfer the outline of the fuselage onto the wood by pushing a pin repeatedly through the plans; follow the outline of the body while the balsa is positioned under the plans. Then take a pencil or ballpoint pen and connect all the pinholes in the wood to outline the shape. (Or you can also trace the outline on thin cardboard, cut out the pattern and then tract around it volkile it is positioned on the wood sheet.)

Use a coping saw or a jigsaw to cut around the outline, but leave at least 3/32 of extra material. When this excess is shaved off with a sharp balsa knife, rile or small plane, finish it off with sandpaper to the exact outline. Drill the 1/4 in dia hole for the wood dowel that supports the front landing gear strut. Add the 1/16 plywood doublers to both side a or the fuselage; note that only the right side has the cut-out to receive the motor. Contact cement makes it easy to laminate the plywood to the balsa..."
