About this Plan

Mini-Wedgy. Free flight sport model. Wingspan 22 in.

Quote: "Mini-Wedgy for CO2, Electric or Rubber Power.

In contrast to the many scale-like cabin models and the newly developed 'pylon' models, Leon Shulman's Wedgy is quite different in appearance. It was apparently designed to comply with the 'low center of lateral area' theory that was prevalent at about that time and also drew upon a Frank Ehling design from the previous season. Shulman is also known for his work with cabin models such as the Gladiator and Rocketeer. Whatever the Wedgy is based upon, it delivered good performance and won a gas event at a pre-WWII National contest.

In appearance, the Wedgy" looks not unlike a wedge from the front and side. It also looks like the wedgy shoe, a popular type for women before WWII. The body is very tall, with the single wheel placed just forward of the lower front edge. There's only one skid, so we might guess that the wheel was intended only for landing. The wing uses a fairly thick, undercambered airfoil, although the trailing edge laysflat on the building board, and a lifting stabilizer airfoil.

This type of layout can probably be expected to fly to the left under power like a cabin model, but the original plans (and these scaled down plans) show 3° of left thrust, plus a small amount of downthrust to control the powered flight. It may be that the body shape and large amount of side area caused the "Wedgy" to turn unexpectedly to the right.

Our model can be flown with a CO2 motor (Brown, TELCO, plus others), an electric motor (HiLine's Micro-4, Mini-6 or comparable motor), or a rubber motor. The model in the photo has a Gasparin 120, which is just slightly larger than the usual Brown/ TELCO 100 size. A few structural differences are evident due to the power type chosen, but they only concern the body.

Body: Begin building the body by laying out the first side frame. Note that the ply mount / former needs a larger hole if the Mini-6 motor is chosen, but that the small Micro-4 hole can also serve as the mount for a rubber power noseblock.

Make up two identical side frames. Use a sanding block to smooth them. Lightly clamp the bottom longerons together with clothes pins, and pin the two frames upside down over the top view. Now, add the cross pieces to make the triangular body box, and the cap strip on the lower longerons.

Cut out the appropriate motor mount / former from plywood. Before gluing it in place, bend the LG wire to shape and attach it with thread and glue to the mount. Now, glue the mount in place. Add the support pieces at the top. Temporarily install either motor type by feeding the copper tube/tank or wires/battery through the opening on the top of the body between the motor mount and the first cross piece. Place either the battery or the tank as far aft as possible for proper balance, but don't secure either in place until the whole model is done (without covering) to allow checking the balance.

For rubber power, make up a noseblock, adding a thread covered dowel cylinder if you like. Use the same plywood mount plate as shown for the Micro-4 electric, with its LG mountings. Now, make up the LG, adjusting its length to clear the longer prop needed for rubber. Add the rear rubber peg mount and cut a piece of tubing to use as the peg.

For any type of power, you should consider a removable cover over the open space between the mount/ former and the front of the wing to keep out dirt and small crawling things..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
