Galaxy Mk3 (oz15626)
About this Plan
Galaxy Mk3 (AKA Galaxy Sailplane & Galaxy Racer). Free flight glider and rubber powered model. Wingspan 33 in.
Note this plan shows the construction of two variants: rubber-powered and glider models.
Quote: "Both the Galaxy Sailplane and Racer have been extensively tested in prototype form, and if correctly built and trimmed will give a highly satisfactory performance.
CONSTRUCTION: Wings: Cover the plan with a piece of wax paper (the inside wrappings of cereal packets are suitable), thus preventing the parts from sticking to it. Cut the two 3/8 x 1/8 trailing edges to size and shape the curved outer ends, with the trailing edges on top of each other, to ensure the same curvature on both. Notch the trailing edges and sandpaper to airfoil section. Pin the trailing edge 3/32 x 3/32 bottom main spar and tip formers W3 and W4 of one wing over the plan. Fit the wing ribs R1-R9 in position. Cant the root ribs R1 towards the wing tip using the dihedral template, which should be made from stiff card. Fit the 3/32 x 3/32 top main spar, the 1/8 x 1/8 leading edge, and the gussets W1 and W2.
Tailplane: A semi-geodetic tailplane design is used so as to obviate the possibility of warping and to provide a very strong structure.
Pin the 3/32 x 3/8 trailing edge, and 3/32 x 3/32 leading edges and tip formers T1 over the plan. Fit the 3/32 x 3/32 fin location strut, and finally the diagonal members. Cement the full members in place first, and the 'cut' members afterwards. Sandpaper the completed tailplane to airfoil section.
Fin: The fin is built in two halves, with the tailplane interposed between them. Build the two halves over the plan using 3/32 x 3/32 for LE and cross members and a 3/32 x 3/8 TE. Fit F9 and gussets F8 and F10. Shape and sand the com-pleted structures to airfoil section.
Fuselage: General Construction: The fuselage is made up of a straight forward slab sided box structure turned on one corner with a cabin super structure added afterwards.
Build the two sides over each other on plan X using 3/32 x 3/32 longerons and uprights. Remove sides from plan, separate with a razor blade, and build up basic fuselage with spacers from plan X. Fit the nose formers Fl. Build up the cabin superstructure as per the G/A illustration on the plan. Fit formers F4, F5, F6, the 3/32 x 1/16 cabin stringers, F14, and windscreen pillar. Cement the celluloid windscreen in position..."

Quote: "Hi Mary/Steve, Please find attached the plan, printwood, instructions and a Performance Kits advertisement for the Galaxy Racer/Sailplane a 33 in wingspan free flight model. The plans and instructions comprised two different designs, these are the low winged Sailplane and the Racer, a low winged rubber duration model.
It is believed that they were sold as two different kits, with the Racer including the additional accessories required for a rubber model. An advert from Model Aircraft, September 1959 [pics 003, 004] shows the Sailplane priced at 6/6, whereas the Racer was more expensive at 7/8, presumably due to the additional cost of the propeller, rubber etc.
The models were designed by Peter (O.F.W.) Fisher and sold as a kit through Peter's company Performance Kits. Best wishes, Mark Robinson"

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
