Asteroid (oz15606)
About this Plan
Asteroid. Rubber cabin model. Wingspan 25 in.
Quote: "Introduction: The Asteroid has been designed as a robust and extremely stable model, combining elegance with an impressive performance. It is the result of considerable development work, both constructionally, and on the flying field. The production prototype model has achieved flights of two minutes under favourable conditions.
Construction: Fuselage: Pin the main 3/32 x 3/32 fuselage longerons in position over the side elevation, fit the 3/32 x 3/32 uprights and the formers F1 and F2. Build the second side over the first ensuring that both sides are identical. Remove from the plan, and separate the sides with a razor blade.
Cement the 3/32 x 3/32 spacers in position over the top elevation, starting with the spacers under the leading and trailing edge of the wings. It is very important to check the alignment of the fuselage, and for this a set square, or square cornered piece of cardboard is recommended. When the centre spacers are secure, cement the ends of the fuselage sides together, with a piece of 3/32 x 3/32 strip between, then fit the remaining spacers, the formers F3 and sandpaper the entire framework. Finally cement the celluloid cabin windows and wind-screen in place. fit the wing retaining dowls and gussets, bind the wire undercarriage in position with thread and cement it securely.
Wings: Cut out the 1/16 sheet wing ribs and sandpaper them carefully. Shape the 1/4 x 3/32 trailing edges so that they follow the airfoil section. Pin the 1/4 x 3/32 sectioned trailing edge, and 3/32 x 3/32 lower main spar of the centre section of the wing over the plan, and fit the ribs R1 in position. Cant the tops of the root ribs towards the centre line of the centre section, using a card template traced off the plan. Fit the 3/32 x 3/32 leading edge and top main spar.
The outer wing panels are built up similarly to the centre section except that the root ribs RI are canted towards the tips of the panels. The Wing tips are cut from 1/4 x 3/32 trailing edge strip, but should be shaped as per the plan..."

Quote: "Hi Mary/Steve, Please find attached the plan, instructions and printwood for the Asteroid, a 25" wingspan cabin, rubber duration model, designed by Peter (O.F.W.) Fisher, which he first flew on 5 May 1958. From 1958 the design was sold as a kit through Peter's company Performance Kits. I have included an advert from Aeromodeller November 1958. Best wishes, Mark"

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
