Quote: "Aerographics BAC Lightning Mk6. Building and Flying Instructions.

This model has been specifically designed for use with the JET-X 50 jet motor. However it can also be flown as a catapult launched glider and can be made to fly as a rubber powered propeller driven model. For this version you will need to obtain rubber and a 6 in plastic prop as these are not supplied in the kit.

Preparation: You will need a flat building board that will take pins and a suitable cutting surface. Pin down the plan and cover with clingfihn or rub with a candle so that the parts will not stick to it. Now carefully cut out all the printed parts. A Swann Morton scalpel with a 10A blade will prove useful. You will also need dress making pins and fine glasspaper preferably glued to a sanding block.

Fuselage: Begin by building two basic sides, shown shaded, from 3/32 balsa directly over the plan. Insert and glue pieces WR1, WR2, WR3 and WR4 as indicated on the plan. Make sure that they are flush with the outside surface of the fuselage. Fix the rear motor mount if you are building the rubber powered version.

Lift the two sides from the building board when they are dry and carefully separate them with a blade. Using 3/32 sq strip cut to the lengths shown on the top view join the two sides as shown in the sketch. Laminate the two 1/16 formers to make Fl and join the front. Join the rear with F9. Now glue the top and bottom formers in place as shown on the plan.

The laminated motor mount is fixed between F5B and F6B, note the down thrust angle. Fit 1/16 keel pieces front and rear to the bottom of the fuselage. Bend the catapult hook from the wire provided. Bind and securely glue to the keel piece and reinforce with glue. Now you may add all the top and bottom stringers referring carefully to the plan for the stringers around the trough. Glue in the tailplane mounts and rear stringers 'A'.

Laminate the intake formers from two pieces of 1/20 and face with ply. Cut the nose hole if you intend to use a rubber motor. Fix it to the front of Fl and wind the 1/64 ply ring around it bevelling the ends to make a neat joint. Now fill the step with 1/20 balsa and sand to follow the line of the stringers.

Roll two jetpipes from notepaper to the pattern on the plan and glue them to F9 with piece TC between.. Now you can fix the two sides of the rear fairing, also cut from notepaper. Carve the nose cone from the block provided. Glue in place for JET-X or glider versions, but drill and bush for rubber (parts not provided.)

Line the trough with notepaper and cover this with a piece of Kitchen foil. Line the area under the motor clip (Provided with the JET-X motor) with a piece of aluminium foil cut from a freezer tray. This is most important as the motor will get VERY HOT! now screw the clip into position.

Wings: Glue the 1/16 reinforcing strips to the main and rear spars making sure that you have 2 handed pairs. Pin down the leading and trailing edges, the tips and cross braces and root strip. Do not fix the LE droop until the wing is lifted from the board. Glue root ribs IF and 1R in place and carefully form the 1/16 intermediate ribs and stub spar.

When the wing is dry lift from the board and score the leading edge and root strip on the line of the crack. Carefully bend the front part of the wing down until it lines up with the slots in the fuselage sides. Fill the cracks with glue and allow to set. Fix the LE tip droop pieces and sand to the section shown..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
