Quote: "Mary and Steve, Keep up the great work of presenting these wonderful plans. I check the site everyday to see what's new and often to review the older plans.

Back in 2016 I found a plan for the Mig-15 with 15" span. I was told it was by Bob Srull. I took the plan and enlarged it in my CAD program to 27 inches. I also made some revisions by using the cracked rib style wing panels. I used 1/16" sheet to cut the main spar tapering from root 1/2" to 1/16" at the tip. I used 1/16" sheet to make the wing tips and added them between the leading edge and trailing edge of each wing panel. I used a 3/32" sq hard balsa leading edge with a 1/16" x1/4" trailing edge.

The ribs are made with 1/16" sq strips laying down one strip flat on the building board between the leading edge and trailing edge. The angled strips are 1/16" sq trusses. The main spar is laid over the bottom of the rib strips and pinned in place after glue is applied. Once the bottom of the wing panel is laid out the top cracked rib is placed pinning the trailing end of the rib in place with glue and gently cracking the front of the rib over the main spar to fit to the leading edge of the wing. A drop of glue on the cracked rib where it passes over the main spar strengens this joint. Once this has been repeated for each rib I then added the turbulator strip on top of the front part of the ribs using another 1/16" sq stringer. This will make a more streamlined airfoil for this wing panel.

For the fuselage, instead of balsa circles cut from sheet I used 1/16" round reed which can be bought from Amazon or Walmart in one spool which will be enough for most modeler's lifetime!! I soaked these reeds cut into 2 foot length and placed in a 2 inch pvc tube with end caps. (purchased at Home Depot sprinklers dept) Once they soaked over night I wrapped them around foamboard formers cut from the plan and glued on the foamboard. A spot of thin super glue after they've dried over night will secure the reed ends together. Because of the size of the formers I diameter I reinforced with diamond squares of 1/16" sq balsa. This makes a very rigid former that is very light.

This whole technique can be seen on stickandtissue.com in the Current Builds Section of the Forum. Here's a link to the complete build: Stick and Tissue Forum - Srull Mig 15 enlarged to 27" span

I then placed the reeds on a ladder style jig to build the fuselage using the lines on the formers to show alignment. I placed stringers 1/32"x1/16" every 1/8" spacing on the formers starting at middle of formers alternating one side to the opposite side. The stringers were glued on the 1/32" edge making the standoff from the former 1/16" high.

I planked the nose between the stringers from the nose to just behind the canopy.

The complete build with pictures can be found at the link above. Included here are a few pictures here [main pic, 003-006]

Tom Akery/Sky9pilot"

ScaleType: This (oz15580) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-15
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Excellent plan and article with good explanation of innovative construction methods.

After viewing the bones pictures I realized this build wasn't using the cracked rib construction. I apologize. My memory of the build failed me. The wing was built with full ribs between L.E. and T.E. with spars over and under the rib. Thanks. If you don't like cutting out ribs, I highly recommend the cracked rib wing construction highly!

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
