About this Plan

Percival Gull. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 18 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hi Steve, I thought that all of the Comet plans had found their way onto Outerzone but then came across this one on a popular auction site. It's a rather nice plan of a Percival Gull at 18", it must be rare because I've never seen it before. For a flying model, I'd definitely enlarge the tailplane but aside from that, it looks very practically designed.
All the best, Dilwyn"

Update 9/8/2024: Added Comet catalogue page from 1936, thanks to Pit.

Quote: "Percival Gull. 18 in span. Kit no 516. The Percival Gull is a thoroughbred in every line. It has won fame abroad for its speed and stamina. This is the ship used by Lady Markham."

    ScaleType: This (oz15464) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percival_Gull
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

The note in the Comet Models catalog is a bit misleading. Beryl Markham did fly a Vega Gull in her record flight from England to Nova Scotia; it's registration marks were VP-KCC. Edgar Percival set a record flying from England to Algeria and back (in one day) in Gull Six G-ADEP (the marks shown on the plan). Jean Batten flew a Gull Six from England to New Zealand; her aircraft was G-ADPR.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
