Quote: "Build your own small field sport flyer. VSP, by Dereck Woodward.
Small field flying is nothing new to me. Back in my native England noisy engines got us kicked off our flying field back in 1992 and it was either quit, drive a long way to fly - or get innovative concerning a barely-used sports field near my house!
Engines were out, but I had tinkered with electrics some, even then. Using one of the then-new Speed 400 motors, some seven-cell packs of 600mAh AA NiCds and an unsus-pecting.049 glow-powered model got me flying, and soon reminded me that overweight models fly poorly. Its successor followed my favorite own-design model route - light, decently endowed with wing area and a low aspect ratio for good low-speed manners.
On to present times, and modern small brushless outrunners allied to LiPo batteries allow us to write a new book on small, light-weight models. Yes, we've come a long way from when I first wrung aerobatics out of that Speed 400 on seven NiCd cells!
While we're discussing flying: Like most taildraggers, take-off is a lot simpler if done into wind. With its light weight and sprightly power, the ground roll is trivial so taking off - and landing - across our tarmac strip is easy. The rudder has adequate power to handle any crosswind that such a light model can be expected to overcome. I like my take-offs to be down that centreline!
At the slower end, the ailerons offer good control without any adverse yaw at low speed. The low aspect ratio wing means that this little bird is not going to bite you with a sudden stall. Pitch response is powerful, though, so go easy on that elevator until you've gained a little familiarity in the air. Its rudder is very 'neutral.' Hit the rudder and the nose yaws over with minimal roll coupling. This little model might look like knife-edge is for some other, sleeker ships but don't let that kid you..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
